I have been on 40mg for a week for unspecific mildish colitis, and the doctor said to taper down to 30mg after one week. I have noticed some improvement, and have had a couple of normal trips to the bathroom already. However, I still have quite a bit of blood about half the trips, usually in the morning, and after I take the pred, later in the day I'll have a more normal movement. Is it too early to start tapering if I am still having blood after one week? I've also noticed more mucus since starting the pred, is this a sign of healing? I am also on 3 Lialda in the morning.

My doctor usually has me taper 5mgm per week.  He did have me tapering 10 mgm but my symptoms returned.
Mucus is my first sign that I am flaring..then the blood appears.  The mucus lasts a long time in my case.  Have you tried rectal meds?

Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Slowly coming out of flare.  Meds: Colazal (6 per day), prednisone 10 mgm and tapering weekly, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning, Benicar 20 mg for BP, flaxseed oil 3 x a day, fishoil 2 x a day, probiotic 3 x a day, calcium with D 1x a day and multivitamin.
Doctor had me on 100 mgm of 6MP which drastically lowered my white count.  Now off the 6MP pending results of repeat white count. UGH.

I had a similar situation when I took pred. My doctor wanted me to taper but I was still having blood and mucus. If I were you I would stay at 40mg for at least 3-4 more days or maybe even another week and then start to taper. I tapered too soon, while still having symptoms and ended up having to go back up to a higher dose and be on pred longer. If you do not have enough pills to do stay at 40mg for a while longer call your doctor...that is what I would do personally anyway...and no, mucus is not a sign of healing it is a sign of flaring.

I was on Canasa for several months, but it stopped working, and now it actually seems to make it worse. I've noticed that with the prednisone, there is less blood but more mucus, not sure why that may be. I plan to stay at the 40mg dose for a few more days until I have consistent relief of the symptoms. My biggest complaint as far as side effects go is heartburn. I have lost weight over the course of my flare so I'm not worried about gaining.

Is it common to have 2 or so "real" BMs in a day, with 3-4 trips where its just a bit of pinkish mucus in between? And as far as the amount of blood that is common, its not just pouring out of me, but mostly bright red on the TP with some blood mixed around with the stool. How bad does that sound? I've heard of people turning the toilet bowl into "tomato soup".

quoted for truth. I would stay on the 40mg till you dont see blood/mucus anymore. I too made the same mistake before of coming off prednisone too soon then having to go on 60mg dose the next time to get the same relief.

Andrew...I had the same problem with Canasa.  The doctor put me on it in May when my latest flare began.  The past two times I used it, it actually burned inside my rectum.  I say two times because when it first happened, I thought maybe I had a fissure....really hurt bad.  The second time, I knew it was related to the Canasa.  Needless to say, I stopped the Canasa, and those babies are EXPENSIVE!!  Good thing I was only getting two week supply at a time.  I have about five left, but the heck with them.  I still use the Cort enemas.  They seem to help.  My problem is this darn insomnia.  Hate to depend on the Ambien CR....especially after hearing that horror story of a commercial..ugh.  They gave it to me for sleep when I was in the hospital last year and I have been using it off and on ever since..not a good idea.  Don't want to wind up like Michael Jackson.
