Hi everyone. Just thought I'd pop in to share my current experience.
In 1995 I was told I had left-sided UC. In 2004 the scope came back showing only one ulcer in my rectum. My GI aggressively tried to treat it with TNF blockers and every rectal med out there to no avail. I had to change GIs due to insurance. The new GI was puzzled and said it doesn't sound like I currently have UC at all, more like solitary rectal ulcer syndrome. She sent me to a colorectal surgeon and he ordered me a dynamic MRI. It came back that I have grade 2 bladder prolapse-(cystocele) and grade 3 rectal prolapse (rectocele). Basically, my uterus, vagina, and bladder collapse onto my rectum when I strain and crush it. The spot they fall onto is coincidentally right where the ulcer is.
So the colorectal surgeon said it would be best to resect the ulcer and then get the prolapses repaired. I had a rectal resection in April 2009 and I felt amazing. It took me a long time to get in with the Urologist. Unfortunately, by June the ulcer had returned. Tomorrow I am finally getting the prolapses repaired. We'll see if it makes a difference. The colorectal surgeon is hopeful that once I have the prolapses repaired, the ulcer will finally heal. He wants me to re-visit my UC diagnosis with my current GI because he says it is bascially impossible to have no signs of UC at all in my colon for so long.
So back to the drawing board. No wonder none of the meds never worked for me. No wonder why I never have had an accident and have had diarrhea get stuck. I didn't even know I had prolapses but I did have symptoms of a buldging sensation down there, very skinny stools and struggle to pass it but I always chalked it up to UC. I currently take Lialda.
I hope this finds you all well.
