Hey everyone.. In a flair right now for over a month but finally comin out of it! :) great feeling... but still on the flair diet... I read somewhere that mangos were okay to eat and easy to digest.. I've been staying away from fresh fruit, is this true about mangos though???? it's like my FAVORITE fruit and if I can eat mangos I would be very very happy

Mangos are one of the best things you can eat. They are supposed to combat poor acidity and poor digestion. I can't think of a better fruit.

They actually helped put me in remission not too long ago, but they are too expensive lately here in Arizona.

Nobody can tell you if your gut will react ok to mangos or not. It's all about trial and error when it comes to diet and UC.

One might get a looser stool or even diarrhea much later in the day or the next day if too much fruit is eaten .... but that shouldn't be a deterrent if you realise that fruit can cause such things.

It won't make your UC flare any worse...just choose when you eat it.

Again, it's trial and error!

I personally stayed away from raw fruits when I was flaring, because chunks of it came out whole in my stool, and that just icked me out. I think I was sick enough that it was too hard to tell if it made things worse, really. Do you like apples? I like to make cooked apples when they're nice and fresh and in season (right now!). I peel and slice a fairly tart apple (Jonathan, Johagold, Granny Smith, etc), then sprinkle just a bit of sugar and salt on it, put in a splash of water and a pat of butter, then microwave. You can cook them just enough to take the crunch out, or cook it all the way down until it's kind of like hot applesauce. It tastes a lot better (IMO), than applesauce, but I think it's easier on the gut than a raw apple.

Now that I'm in remission, I can eat anything. This summer, I ate a ton of grape tomatoes, raspberries, and sweet corn all in one day. The next day, I had some massive pooping. I was a bit scared at first, wondering if a flare was starting again (not due to food, but just starting), but then I reminded myself that was a NORMAL reaction for my colon, or for anyone's!

Mango, papaya, kiwi and pineapple are all natural digestive enzymes, when eaten after each meal they can actually aid with digesting/breaking down your food, less work on the gut when you eat digestive enzymes. People that cannot tolerate them in their natural form use supplement form, often offered in the same flavores as the natural ones.

Mangos are high in fructose; so they are a no-no for people who are fructose intolerant like me.

I do eat pineapple. It has to be fresh pineapple. It's good for digestion, not so high in fructose, and does not have as high as a fructose/glucose ratio.

I eat any fruit I want whether flaring or not.  Just like everything else, eat in moderation and if it is a new food, then ease into it, don't overload  and shock your system.

*shrug* I freeze them and toss em in smoothies. Haven't bothered me. Fruit actually never bothers me unless I'm flaring, and even then it's the fiber. If that's an issue for you, try canned fruit, or try stewing it (warm cinnamon apples mmm).

i try to stay away from mango - even though i love them. Reason: this fruit produces heat in the body and according to Ayurveda(India medicine) should avoid heat producing food in UC. i stay away or if i want to eat - i limit the quantity i eat.

Hi Saposs,

Is your constitution pitta? Colitis is supposed to be a pitta imbalance. I'm vata dominant, but I'm trying to reduce my pitta and vata owing to colitis being a pitta issue. I haven't been following the pitta diet though. The diet says not to eat spinach. I can understand spinach not being good for a pitta consitution, but it's great for taming a colitis flare.

the only thing one needs after eating mangoes is floss.

The only reason I stay away from some fruit is gas....and the major culprits for me are bananas and pears and some plums. I don't eat the skins of plums or apples just because I don't really like them.

I'd eat fruit in the evening....certainly not during the day.

Now dried fruit...most all gives me gas, but some are worth having in salads or with raw nuts. Yummy.

If you do have any loose stool tomorrow....don't freak out about it. Since the fruits you ate are high in digestive enzymes, that in itself can cause diarrhea depending on what you've eaten previously.

Actually, the less you worry, the less problems you might have....

so, this would imply that if i were to eat these fruits AFTER a meal, it would help with the pain and inflammation becuz of the smaller amount of work my colon has to perform on my food?

i thought that all the food was broken down in small intestines and by the time it got to the colon, it is already some form of poo. no longer that steak or burger or fries. and the colons job was to extract water from this poo.

am i completely wrong here or just a bit confused?
