I could be wrong, but the way I understand it, prednisone actually reduces the inflammation rather than "mask" anything. It also has the effect of "increasing a feeling of wellbeing", so in that way, I guess it could be said to mask a sense of illness. But it works as an anti-inflammatory, and is used in other illnesses to also reduce inflammation. And cortisone cream is used on skin conditions that require a reduction of inflammation.
When tapering off pred, if one does it too quickly, the symptoms can recur or "rebound."
I would think that at this point maybe you could ask your doctor if you reduce by 5 mg at a time rather than 10, to minimize chances of symptoms recurring?
