     To those of you suffering from ulcerative proctitis...do you have sharp pain in the rectum?  I am currently in a bad flare, bleeding, mucus, urgency.  Doctor has me on 40 mgm of prednisone and wants me to keep up with the cort enemas, but I cannot retain them but he said even if a little gets up there for a short time, it still coats the rectum.  I find this very painful.

Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Slowly coming out of flare.  Meds: Colazal (6 per day), prednisone 10 mgm and tapering weekly, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning, Benicar 20 mg for BP, flaxseed oil 3 x a day, fishoil 2 x a day, probiotic 3 x a day, calcium with D 1x a day and multivitamin.
Doctor had me on 100 mgm of 6MP which drastically lowered my white count.  Now off the 6MP pending results of repeat white count. UGH.

Even when my proctitis isn't flaring I sometimes get a horrible sharp pain in the anus region, I'm just thankful that it doesn't happen often and it's usually just a short quick spurt of pain cuz man it sure catches me off guard and I jump like a crazy person from it...so glad it's never happend in public LOL.

:)
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.
~~~~~~~~My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)~~~~~~~~
I get that fleeting rectal pain as well and it hurts like mad. One time my daughter (who is healthy btw) had it and she popped up off the couch, grabbed her tush and ran around in circles! :) I'm sorry that your in so much pain. I just wished that something could work for you and get you in remission.
     Thank you all.  I was able to retain the enema about half an hour last night...whoopieee.  However, this morning, boom, urgency and blood and mucus ran right down my leg..ugh.  This was after my morning bath..lol.  Oh well.  Just sitting here and dreaming of getting that Remicade.
Just keep thinking that by this time next week, you WILL be symptom free. I hope and pray you will be...you deserve it.
     Thanks Lucas.  I hope I can get it next week.  So far no word from the insurance company.  My doctor said as soon as he gets the ok he will send me right in for the Remicade.  I am getting kinda down because I have been on 40 mgm of prednisone since Wednesday with no change whatsoever in my condition.  The doctor doesn't want the prednisone increased either.  I am off the 6MP.  Getting disgusted and ready to stop the probiotics, flaxseed oil capsules too and the Colazal but afraid to stop the Colazal.  Doc took me off the 6MP when he knew I was ready for Remicade.  Guess he doesn't want my white count too low.
I never have rectal pain unless I have a hemmhroid. I have had the situation where I couldn't hold a suppository in for more than a few minutes though, how frustrating. They are so expensive and I hate wasting them.
I am sorry you're still feeling bad. shakehead
Rectal pain - you betcha! That is one of the hallmarks of my flares...it hurts like hell down there. I get both the sharp/direct pain, as well as the swollen/pressure feeling. And, I have a tendency to develop hemorrhoids/fissures, which are also quite painful.
I have had some trouble holding in a suppository/enema in the past. Fortunately, I am able to do so now, but it also hurts. I basically get the darn drug in there and LIE STILL on my left side until I fall asleep. Then I can usually hold it for hours. Regardless, your doctor is probably right that some medication is better than none.
Just keep working at it and take some comfort in the fact that many many of us have similar issues.
37 y.o. male - Diagnosed with UC (left-sided) in 2005 with C. Diff infection, massive bleeding and hospitalization
Since 2006, have had 1 moderate flare and a few small ones
Currently having moderate-to-severe flare
Taking Asacol (6/day), Imuran (150mg), Chinese herbs, probiotics, Folic Acid, Iron - not sure if any of it does any good.
Just started on hydrocortisone enema. Hopefully that will stop the infernal bleeding!
Have taken: Ciclosporin (Neoral), Prednisolone, Balsalazide/Colazal, Canasa, Rowasa
