Hi, I can relate to what you're feeling as my daughter has been dealing with almost two years of flaring since she was diagnosed. Her doctor once referred to her UC as "the worst case he's ever seen"--and without a doubt we would have had her colon removed two years ago were it not for the fact that my husband also has UC, which was immediately brought under control with sulfasalazine and a short course of prednisone when he had his first flare 15 years ago. Knowing that he has been able to control his disease for 15 years keeps us hanging on and hoping that her disease can be controlled as well.
I agree with one of the previous posts, you should not start too many supplements and medications at the same time, as you will be unable to tell what is working and what is not. It's difficult to be patient, I know, because you just want to try EVERYTHING in the hope that something will work! I try to give at least two weeks (unless it is obvious that something is making her UC worse, then she will stop taking it immediately), between trying new things. And especially when trying natural substances, it sometimes can take a month or two to see a change for the better, unlike most modern meds, which tend to give a quicker result.
We did the SCD for awhile beginning in the spring of 2008, it did not seem to help at all and was extremely difficult to adhere to. We started the Maker's Diet in January of this year, and noticed a big improvement (she had been bleeding daily for 5 months at that point, within two days after starting the diet her bleeding stopped, then started up with a vengeance three weeks later when she had a remicade infusion. The remicade had really stopped working after the first two infusions anyway, so we stopped the remicade and she improved a bit and the bleeding stopped again.) The Maker's Diet is also limited and difficult to adhere to, but we found it MUCH easier than the SCD!
We take her to an ND as well as her gastroenterologist, the ND has been very helpful. Her gastroenterologist is wonderful, he is totally on board with doing anything that makes my daughter WELL. I agree with you that you will not find huge trials for natural methods as opposed to modern prescript
ions, but in a way, something that has been used for thousands of years and is still being used is a bit of a successful trial, no? Boswellia is also on our "to do" list.....planning on starting it at the end of December.
