After my coffee in the morning my system sort of empties out.  After about 5X (thankfully no bleeding or diarrhea right now) I'm pretty much done for the day.

Anyone else's body like this?

I've been the same for a while now.

2-3 BMs in the AM and then typically fine for the rest of the day. Quite a few people have it that way, and I think with UC the colon can become slower at emptying out due to scarring or because it just needs more time to get the job done now.

I've been trying to figure out how get back to normal (1 BM a day) and have tried different probiotics, varied the doses of my maintenance meds (including increasing rectal meds vs oral mesalamine), and a few diet changes too, but not much of a difference seen.

I look forward to my morning poo...eating, coffee or even just 2 glasses of water can stimulate a bm.

If you go 5 times in the morning, I'd say there's more going on such as mild inflammation.

I have one rarely two in the morning or another in the evening depending on what I've been eating and how late my supper was the night before.

John, you might find adding a fibre supplement would help somewhat, unless you're already eating/adding a lot of fibre, that could account for a larger stool amount.

If you're having small stools, the fibre supplement could help bulk them up.

I would suggest probiotics.

If your bms increase or you have urgency, increased mucus, rectal discomfort/pain upon bms, I would say you're flaring and should add rectal meds to the mix nightly.

What meds are you on now? could you add that to your siggie?

Yes, even when I've been in complete remissions, my pattern has been to go 3 -4 times in the morning - and then be fine the rest of the day.
My GI has called this "clustering in the mornings."

I figure maybe the lining is scarred or damaged enough from prior flares that what might be one big poop for other people doesn't get moved along all at once for me, so to move it through takes several sittings.

Fibers not the issue here...The first few are a big quanity then the others tend to be small...

It's only a problem when I have to be a work on fridays because I go in at 8 instead of 10 am.

Wow, thanks for all the replies.  I feel a little more normal reading others that are the same way.

Some of you called it "mild flaring" and others called it "non-flaring."   I guess that's relative depending on how bad you've been in the past.   I've been much, much worse in the past (basically nothing solid coming out), so I can really be empathetic for other UC sufferers.

I started taking probiotics, and also husk powder several months ago and I think it's put me in this "remission."

When in remission this describes my routine. I have what I call a bm session, going 2-4 times starting when I first get up to about 1.5 hours later. My doctor did believe that is caused by all the scarring I have had from years of ulcers. The stool really doesn't collect and want to stay in the lower bowell so when portions of stool reach that lower part, my colon goes spastic in order to get rid of it; so it does come in waves. If traveling I make sure to get up 1.5 hours before everyone else and have coffee right away in order that I may have unlimited access to an unoccupied bathroom during this session. I don't have much time from when I first start feeling the urge until things are coming out.

My AM routine- up at 5:45am, drink H20 with my meds... sip coffee... run to bathroom... read paper, do morning things... run to bathroom... read paper.... run to bathroom... read paper... run to bathroom. And repeat about 4-6 more times, 'til I'm ready to leave at 8:30am. And even then, sometimes I have to stop during the 20 minute trip to school then work! If I don't go at least 4 times every morning, I'm in trouble. Hence my issues as of late- not going much at all, just numerous trips with gas & bloody mucous. I kust know it's going to catch up with me one of these days, & watch out! Even while in "remission", I go at least 3-4 times every morning.
diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
various probiotics
Fiber supplement

Eva, I do the same thing but no blood or diarrhea right now. So after the 5th or 6th time I'm always thinking...why stop there? Why not 7th or 8th? Because I can never really tell...okay this is the last time.

I think my mind says to my body..."you'd better stop now...or else....!!!" Because I have to eventually drive to work, hence the reason for worrying on my way to work.  But because my colon is so empty, there isn't too much pressure there anymore.  Needless to say, I'm still a bundle of nerves.

Amazing what we put up with isn't it?

i think everyone on the planet with or without UC has a poo in the morning.
its a natural progression from eating the day before and laying down all night then getting up and moving around.
perfect time for a clear out!

I have had the morning thing for 25 years - from one to five BMs, often more and more watery.
23 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.

Melatonin huh? The sleep agent? You take it at night and it eases morning BM's?

Yes, mornings are when most of the action happens. 2-4 times from the early morning hours until 9 am. Seems to be when everything eaten from the day before comes to call. All I have to do is open my eyes in the morning and the party starts.

Kazygirl said that she thinks everyone on the planet has a poo every morning with or without UC?  Not so in my younger years.  I was lucky if I went twice a week.  The doctor said it was "normal" for me...yeah right.  That was my family physician who prescribed antibiotics for everything from having sniffles to a hang nail.  I believe that is why I suffer with ulcerative proctitis today, thanks to him and his overprescribing.  Not only did I go just twice a week but I was CONSTIPATED....ugh.  Now things have reversed.
At the moment I consider myself in remission thanks to Remicade and I usually go only once or twice in the morning...a nicely formed gorgeous poo...no blood.  However, I must have eaten too much yesterday because today I went five times!!!  Each one was longer than the previous turd....sorry to gross everyone out...just like to brag I guess.  But I wonder how the colon can hold so much poo!  Mine slides out easily due to the flaxseed oil capsule.   I heard that lines the colon and helps things come out SMMOOOOOthe.

Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Flare May of 09 thru Aug of 09.  Very short remission.  Flared again Nov 1st.  First infusion of Remicade Nov 18th.  Taken off the 6MP,  still on Colazal, 30 mgm of prednisone, cort suppository every other night. Calcium, probiotic, vitamin with iron, benicar for high blood pressure. Flaxseed oil capsule.  Great improvement with first Remi infusion...hope and pray it continues.  Ambien CR for sleep.

This is the story that defines my existence!!

I get up 3 hours before I have to go anywhere, and even in remission, I usually have 1-5 in the morning. If I'm feeling well they are formed, and if I'm not, anything is possible. If I don't go, I feel really worried the rest of the day that the diarrhea is going to strike at an unfortunate time. I have tried many things to stop this but i can't figure out a plan. If anyone has any tips, feel free to share!

Glad I'm not the only one.

Yeah mornings seems to be the bane of my bowels, too. Late at night it can get kinda' chaotic, too, though only during a flare. When I'm not flaring, I am usually have 2 BMs ever/every other morning.

My mornings......Up at least every 2hrs through out the night to go. Sometimes I wake up, go...lay down, and then have to get right back up and go again! UGH...Then I have to wake up at least 2 hours before I have to be somewhere, whick sometimes is enough time and sometimes not...on those days I usually will have to stop somewhere it use it again. The worrying sucks. I go like 4-7 times in the mornings. Sometimes its an all day thing sometimes I only go a few times during the day. But when night time comes it gets bad again! I take Lomotil sometimes to help me not have to go so much. I really helps a lot.

I am sooo glad I stumbled on this post..I was looking for things on morning bms and urgencies..and it seems MANY others have the same issues.. Are we really in "remission" though if this is happening everything morning???
I usually have to go once RIGHT away when my eyes open in the morning and it comes out fast..not watery but comes out fast..I hear this can be due to the flax oil I take..Then I can get on with my day and may go once more in the am hours and then its smooth sailing the rest of the day.

I am not sure if its URGENCY or just a fast moving poo..does this make sense?? I have started to use suppositories and I am only seeing a very small difference at the moment.

I dropped from 3-4 morning BM's to 1 by just foregoing my morning cup of coffee. Well worth the sacrifice.

Ugh, yes. I usually go 2-3 times within 2 hours or so after I eat; if I ate something funky the day or two before or skipped fiber or probiotics, I might go more than that. It is so annoying. It usually only takes me half an hour to an hour to get ready, but instead I have to get up at least 2.5 hours early.

Amazing how similar I am to your stories. I also have to rise 3 hours or more before having to leave and have never been an early riser. Quit coffee because it just overstimulates my colon. Boy do I have to wrestle with my brain who insists that coffee is what I want lol.

For years my pattern has been 4-6 times in the morning. Only lately due to healing through diet has the # of times sloowly started to decrease with improvement in quality and decrease in urgency. Happy days.
Ulcerative colitis 10 years
Jan 2010 started SCD diet (tried 5 years earlier no improvement)
Jan 2010 first time in 10 years bleeding stopped, better behaved colon
Started reducing meds 6 weeks after colon improved with diet-all OK
Current diet: eliminated carbohydrates, no dairy except tiny amt. hard cheese, no juice
I eat: high protein (meat/eggs not soy),nuts, non-starch veg (no potatoes), no grains, no bread
Daily: fish oil spoonful, Vit E 1000 twice a day with oil/fat, greens juice, sunflower seeds, probiotic acidophilus pill
Highly recommend: the book "Life without Bread" and the SCD Diet

This is definitely the same for me. I get up at 8, straight to the toilet. Get into work for 9, and then go to the toilet 3 or 4 more times and then I am fine. I am flaring at the moment though. When in remission I go once in the morning, like clock work.

Weekends however are a completely different story as my routine is very different. Tend to sleep in and wake up later, don't eat at the same times etc.
