What to take to bulk up stool

     I am in a flare, so cannot tolerate fiber but my stools are very soft and I am having some bleeding.  Urgency is an issue tooeyes .  I am back on the dreaded prednisone, hopefully for only a short stint.  My rectum feels like I have no control down there.  Are there some foods I could try?  I have bananas here at home and I know they can be binding. 
Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Flare May of 09 thru Aug of 09.  Very short remission.  Flared again Nov 1st.  First infusion of Remicade Nov 18th.  Taken off the 6MP,  still on Colazal, 30 mgm of prednisone, cort suppository every other night. Calcium, probiotic, vitamin with iron, benicar for high blood pressure. Flaxseed oil capsule.  Great improvement with first Remi infusion...hope and pray it continues.  Ambien CR for sleep.

Spinach (especially canned) can help bulk up BMs. Also even if you can't tolerate fiber in foods, a supplement like metamucil capsules should be good for you as it bulks up BMs and the fiber is a fine powder so it doesn't irritate.

As you know, I'm a Metamucil fan, but spinach sure bulks them up for me.......how about rice, as in the BRAT diet....?
Hope some of these ideas work....

Christine, I've tried so many kinds of fiber... psyllium capsules, psyllium powder, psyllium seed powder, citracel, metamucil, etc etc.  The only one I think that works for me are the metamucil wafers.  Maybe because they are in such a different form of fiber, they might work for you, too.  I don't like the calories they have or the wheat, or any of the other additives, but they really are the only thing that have worked.

I don't know if you want to use them during the flare and you said you can't tolerate fiber, but maybe when the pred kicks in, they might help, even having half a package.       

I'm sorry to hear about the flare and sending good thoughts your way.

Currently on Pred 5 mg, Asacol 3 3x a day, Rowasa every other night Imuran 150 mg (off until liver function is normal) 12/15/09 Back on Imuran 75 mg with weekly liver/blood tests 12/21/09 liver tests off the chart again, so I'm off Imuran for good.   
omeprazole 2xday, lomotil, cholestramine, atenolol, oxazepam (anti anxiety med) when needed, primadophilus reuteri, childrens centrum, slow FE, nicorette gum, metamucil fiber wafers

Work your way up with psyllium husk fiber. I'm at 1 tbs a day. It definitely helped me through my flare. Don't need it so much now. Oatmeal helps too.

diagnosed pancolitis mild to moderate on Sept. 15, 2009
tapering, 2.5 mg prednisone and 0 alternating every other day for a week
4 400 mg. asacol 3 times daily,
1000 mg. Canasa - nightly
1 tbs psyllium husk powder drinks
VSL-#3 -- one packet daily
Multi-vitamin, 1200 calcium plus D,
Biotin 5000 1 tabs daily
1000 mg fish oil
200 mg. Lamictal (bipolar), 5 mg. Zyprexa (depression), 1/3 mg. Klonipin (anxiety)
Eliminated dairy, red meat,alcohol caffeine, spicy, fried.
Low oil, mostly steamed or soft veggies, peeled fresh or frozen fruits.

When having issues with fibre via food, supplement form is the next best thing.

bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.
