I think I was in a permanent flare and I'm talking 9+ years. I would sometime stop bleeding but other symptoms, namely urgency, remained constant. There was almost no day or time that it was off my mind.
I started out with U. proctitis and it became UC and seemed until just recently like it was the whole colon because I started feeling it on my right side too not just the left.
4 weeks ago I changed my diet even though I have been through every UC diet known to woman because I was getting worse. Today I can tell you that I am better than I've been in many many years.
You wondered whether it could be something you ate and I say "Yes it could be".
UC is an incredibly hard disease to eat for. What works for some people doesn't work for others. My diet is high protein-high non-starch veggies, no grains, no gluten, no fruit except non-sweet fruits, no sugar, no caffeine, no chocolate.
It is not easy to plan my daily meals but since I am seeing good results for the first time I can deal with it.
All I can suggest is to keep a food log and really really pay attention to what your GI tract is doing. It's really hard but really worth it.
Ulcerative colitis 10 years
progressed from proctitis to left-sided a couple years ago.
Meds: 50 mg MP6 and (3) times 2 Balsalazide per day (started reducing # pills Feb 2010)
Rowasa- not needed since start of SCD diet
Jan 2010 started SCD diet (again-tried 5 years earlier no improvement)
This time measurable improvement-bleeding stopped, better behaved colon
Diet modification: (within SCD) No fruit juice and only 2-3 oz of either blueberries or raspberies/day, no other fresh or dried fruit
Have not added yogurt because past intolerance to yogurt even SCD homemade
Tried DCCC cheese-poor results
I have tried almost every UC diet there is with little improvement until just now
Current condition-best in a very long time
I have been tested for gluten and dairy-both tests showed no intolerance (haha)
