Zippy123 - He stopped taking the Colazal as of today, he too feels like it's making the bleeding worse. Glad to know there is someone else that feels the same way.
s2kredhead - We aren't truly sure if he can tolerate cheese...it's hit or miss with him. If he eats cheddar with triscuits as a snack the next day he's in the bathroom and constipated...but cheese baked in things doesn't seem to bother him. He's adding parmesan to his turkey burgers today, I will let you know how it goes. And you suggest substituting almond flour for cashew or pecans? Do you yourself grind them in the food processor or are you buying them as a form of nut butter like PB? I have one (a food processor) and have both nuts, let me know and I'll try it. He LOVES brownies and at this point anything resembling a brownie would probably make him very happy.
ElephantPipe - He didn't have a reaction to the yogurt, his Mom called and said she read in the book that if he's still having the D to stop doing the yogurt and introduce it another time when he's feeling better. He was doing the goat yogurt to start with. The doctors think the fever is being caused by the CMV.
A little bit about
CMV: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus related to the virus that causes chickenpox. Infection with CMV is very common. Most people are exposed to the virus in their lifetime, but it usually produces mild or no symptoms in healthy people. However, serious CMV infections can occur in people with weakened immune systems. This includes patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer and patients on immune-suppressing medicines following an organ transplant. In rare instances, more severe CMV infection involving the GI tract has been reported in people with healthy immune systems. When CMV colitis occurs in someone with a normal immune system, the person typically has other serious medical conditions such as a severe injury, kidney failure, or infection.
His blood work, while on 6MP, was always good. He was only on 6MP (this time) for 12-14 days. The fever & headaches continued and therefore the doctor took him off of it. The doc was worried it was causing the viral symptoms. That's when we opted for remicade and started that instead. My husband had tried 6MP once he was back from his deployment, he was only on it for 2 months and didn't think it was doing anything...our doc at that time never really explained the need to stay on it long term or else he probably would have continued on it. He also started remicade shortly after that too. Did about
3 or 4 fusions and then quit. We can't remember why...maybe he felt better...we don't know. Again, it was never explained to us that he should remain on either for the long haul b/c of the chances he could become immune to them...anyway...
tommouse - so what is it that you are on?
I think I am going to start doing more with the diet and just see what happens. We've been cautious and taking it slow but he's starving and before he goes off I think I'll bake somethings to help the hunger that follow the diet and then go from there.
I don't know...
Again, thanks for all the advice, keep it coming!!
Husband was diagnosed with left sided UC in late 2001. Started off on Asacol 3 pills 3 x's daily with no issues until 2006. Flare Dec 06 thru March 08 (started right before & continued throughout a deployment to Iraq). Haven't truly been in remission since then. Tried various meds and nothing has seemed to work. Hospitalized (1st time) in Jan 2010 for 12 days. Did various tests while in hospital: lumbar puncture, colonoscopy, urine & stool samples, blood tests...all for various things and all came back negative! Eventually looked for CMV gastroenteritis/colitis and came back positive.
Currently on: Prednisone, started @ 60mg now down to 35 mg, drop 5mg each Friday; Remicade, going for 3rd treatment soon, Colozal 3 pills x 3 daily; Rowasa, when needed; Valcyte (for CMV gastroenteritis/colitis) 450mg 2 pills x 2 daily. On the SCDiet.
Have Tried : Asacol/Canasa/Probiotics/Iron Supplement/Multivitamin/6MP/Dicyclomine/Fish Oil/Lact-Enz/Zymex II/Cholacol II/Benefiber/IntestiNew/Super Acidophilus Complex
