My GI physician recommended that I try Aloe Vera Juice for UC symptoms.  Anyone have any information on benefits/risks?  She did say she had not seen any conclusive clinical trials performed, however, some of her other patients had see some benefits.

Currently, I'm in a flare that is tapering off, on 30 mg Pred., Colazal maintenance meds.

I was diagnosed with Pancolitis in November 2007.

no, never tried it, but others have..they'll be in with feedback.

Have you been on rectal meds yet? your GI should have suggested them as well.

I tried it when I first had symptoms several years ago and it was not helpful. I think it also may have a laxative effect, which we don't need.

I have heard so many good things about the healing powers of Aloe Vera juice. I tried it off and on for a couple weeks, but my doctor deterred me because he said that is could still be fibrous. you know how we are told to keep a low fiber diet. I'm not sure he was quite schooled in the healing powers of the juice, but Have heard some fabulous stories about people who have been put into remission, and semi-cured of their UC as well as other symptoms just from drinking about 3 ounces of aloe a day! Good luck! I have more info to send later including websites! Hope this helps..

Ok, I promised more info..

Here are two very helpful resources I found:
ALOE contains a variety of compounds with confirmed antioxidant capacity and other putative health benefits (such as blood glucose, cholesterol and cortisol lowering properties) relating to the prevention or treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and hypertension.

Many of the health benefits associated with Aloe vera have been attributed to the polysaccharides contained in the gel of the leaves. These biological activities include promotion of wound healing, antifungal activity, hypoglycemic or anti-diabetic effects anti-inflammatory, anticancer, immunomodulatory and gastroprotective properties. ……. recently discovered effects and applications of the leaf gel. These effects include the potential of whole leaf or inner fillet gel liquid preparations of Aloe Vera to enhance the intestinal absorption and bioavailability of co-administered compounds as well as enhancement of skin permeation.

Notes from www.pubmed.gov

Here is another link for AloeGold from a company called Univera. http://francoach.myunivera.com/
You're welcome to check out the site. I've tried many of their products, and they work wonders. The AloeGold is found if you just go to "The Products" up top, then hit "Fortify", and then click on Aloe Gold.

Hope some of this was helpful!

I never tried it myself, but the nurse who works for my GI doctor told me they had a patient years ago who swore by it....guess it worked because he no longer is a patient of my GI doctor..lol.

Thanks for all the information! I am definitley going to do some research and maybe do a little trial and error. Perhaps when I'm out of this current flare up. I was concerned when I found some websites that stated that it had a "cleansing effect." We certainly don't need any more of that do we? :)

I found Aloe Vera at Walmart in gallon jugs. Also in smaller flavored containers. I tried to drink a glass as soon as I got home and just couldn't. It tastes similar to the pre-colonoscopy laxitive and had the similar salty taste. The flavored bottle is still in the fridge. I doubt I'll try it either.

I've heard that certain aloe juices have the "laxative effect" component removed. That's the one you should find.

I've never used aloe so can't give personal testimony on it. It's "illegal" on the Specific Carb. Diet because it has polysaccharides.

George's Roadrunner Aloe Vera juice is safe to try, if you're worried about laxative effects because the aloin has been removed. Here's more info:
