I understand how VSL3 can be expensive but I think it is important to take some kind of probiotics everyday to keep the bad flora from taking hold. You need to determine if only one packet a day is sufficient most of the time. But when I feel that a flare is coming, either from looser stools or whatever, I find the following the be very helpful:
I mix apple sauce, frozen or fresh blueberries, psyllium seed powder (not husks), and two packets of VSL3. I take this two times a day for a couple of days until things become lubey dubey again. Besides looser stools I have unique symptoms (for me) of an oncoming flare such as an increase in my heart rate. I also get a spike in my fasting blood sugar from 85/95 to 105/120 which is why I measure my blood sugar every morning. I notice that the members of this forum do not seem to have this problem unless they are on Pred or something. The psyllium seed/VSL3 combination seems to quiet things down again. This works for minor symptoms but probably would not short circuit a full blown flare (but I would not be surprised if it did, hope I never again need to find out).
So I only take 2 packets of VSL3 twice a day when I feel a flare is coming, otherwise a smaller, cheaper amount of probiotics for a daily dose. If you can afford it, don't worry about taking too many probiotics or becoming dependent. Probiotics are not drugs. A food diary is also useful to see which foods trigger symptoms.
