Contrary to what some have said on here, resection is done for UC patients, and I myself am considering surgery and a few surgeons have recommended it as an alternative.
UC can come back to any part of the colon, but it does not always come back, and my surgeon has performed several successful resections and he has yet to have a single patient who sees UC return to a different part of the colon.
My philosophy is that you want to keep as much of your colon as possible and if you have mild inflammation in the rectum, most surgeons will recommend you retain the rectum and in some cases, the sigmoid colon.
If a surgeon tells you otherwise, get a different opinion. There are many options out there in terms of surgery for UC patients.
