I use Asacol supps 500mg at night and they seem to be ok. I had 2 flares years ago where I doubled up on the asacol supps so that I was inserting one at night and one in the morning and that was fine - I went back into remission but with my last flare the UC has obviously spread and the asacol supps no longer did the trick. I went onto cortizone tablets and then the cortizone enemas which cleared me up (also asacol tablets for a while.) Now that I'm in remission again, I use the asacol supps every night to maintain remission (hopefully.) I think if the UC hasn't spread more than 4-5cm of the rectum, then the asacol supps should work but mine had spread about
7cm up and they no longer worked. Not sure, it's different for everyone. They also may not be strong enough. My GI says that (here in Cape Town) there is a stronger make suppository that has come out. You probably get it already in the States.
Cape Town Colitis
Diagnosed 2001 with Ulcerative proctitis. Used 1 suppository per night for maintenance.
Had a couple of flare-ups which were solved with use of Asacol suppositories - 2 per day.
Last flare-up: Mid Dec 2010 - very bad. Suppositories didn't work. Prednisone 20mg (4 tabs per day)+ asacol tabs 400mg helped slightly but no remission.
Cortizone enemas - 1 per night for 2 weeks resulted in remission.
Currently taking Asacol tabs 800mg and 1 Asacol suppository per night to maintain remission.
