Have you tried rectal meds? Maybe you can get cort-enemas and that would help get your back on track? I personally wouldn't worry too much about
the disability thing, you need to worry about
getting healthy. If you started prednisone, you would probably be feeling OK for work within a few days. The problem is that prednisone can have terrible side effects and sometimes it's difficult to get off of it without having relapses. I don't think this is the norm, seems to be more normal for people to do a short course of prednisone, get off, get into remission and not flare for a while. For me, I haven't been so lucky. You could try other 5ASA medication, some people have more luck with Colazal than Lialda. It did not make a difference for me but for some it does... The problem with trying different meds is that it could prolong your getting healthy and cause you to continue to miss work.
Did you have a colonoscopy? Was your UC throughout? How many times are you going each day?
