My GP who is also a herbalist, has given me a tonic that includes golden seal to help me through my current flareup, it's supposed to help with diarrhea. She knows what meds I'm on, so it's all good. Not sure about echinacea, though if you're not currently on meds for UC, should be ok. GP says she would rather treat patients through more natural means rather than antibiotics etc.
Dx UC 1991
minor flare ups always mild, treated with prednisone/or dipentum
Mar2009 1st major flare up, treated with prednisone/salofalk enemas, maintenance Dipentum
July 2010 2nd major flare up, currently tapering from 50mg prednisone, salofalk enemas.
Daily Supplements- Vitamin D, liquid fish oil, probiotics, intestamine.

I've got a cold/laryngitis right now and took some echinacea and sisu Healthmune but not goldenseal.

I've read that those with autoimmune disease should take caution when using some immune enhancers in the event it can trigger a flare response.

So far, no flare problems and I'm on maintenance meds, and I'm super ticked I have to deal with this cold. It has triggered a severely bad disposition, however..lol.

But for some, the distress from a cold can possibly trigger a flare.

I, too, want my flu shot and hope to not have to delay it as I have had to in some years past.

I wouldn't think it would hurt, I would try a good quality oil of oregano for colds and can possibly help with colitis even.
Flu shot not me, read the ingredients and possible connection to auto-immune problems before you decide. I really don't know if there is any hard evidence of it preventing the flu anyways.

I can totally relate to the fear of what's in immunisations...scary.
But flu shots don't prevent "the flu"...it only helps build up one's immunity against the three big ones that are floating around that have the potential to kill or to spread quickly to the point of pandemic.

There are MANY flu viruses and are easy to pick up during the flu season, and with so many travelling all over the world, they mutate quite nicely.

Zippy...what's a good quality oil of oregano? Do you have any particular brands that you use and that don't taste totally horrific? lol..

Oil of oregano, is all very strong stuff, you can't get away from that really, but one of the most reputable brands is North American Herb and Spice P73.

I tried cheaper brands in capsules like NOW brand, but they bother my stomach. The dropper from North American just a 2 to 4 under the tongue and wash down with water or juice after a short time. It is a good idea to go with a trusted brand in this case.

They say Vit D is good in prevention of flu as well I forgot to say.

I order mine online through iHerb or Vitacoast. Yes it is hard to say if VitD or anything helps or not, but Vit D is cheap and doesn't hurt that's for sure. I know they always say those with colitis tend to have a low count on certain vitamins.

Last year I remember having a short bout with a bug, but it didn't last long and not real bad, so maybe something helped, could even been the probiotics helping who knows.

Hard to say...I take all of the above and look after myself relentlessly...cold/flu viruses definitely take their time leaving more now than before. Of course, my asthma is affected as well with viruses...sigh.

In actual fact...fighting a flare for me is so much easier and predicatable than a cold.

Be well...
