I am lead to believe that adrenals are responsible for energy & stamina aswell as helping to cope with stress. Before my colitis kicked in I had a stressful year or should I say was running on empty although I thought I was coping just fine yet my body was in disagreement to my mind.
I always saw the colitis as just ulcers, which you get in your mouth when feeling run down, so knew somehow I was run down. The auto-immune thing never rung true to me (I am not attacking myself?!)and still doesn't, I feel it is a medical cop out for what they don't understand and basically means an inflammation. If mouth ulcers can just run their course, well so can my colitis ulcers which I believe they have. If there are no adrenals to help the body recover then the ulcers don't have any chance of healing fully. That is how I understand it to be.
I took many lots of Steroids which I never felt helped until I was on my last legs ie in hospital flat out, even my doctor was suprised that I didn't react as fast as others to them. I think this was because they were just tearing up my already wrecked system. Without the adrenals to help with daily energy the system is pretty weak and tired, hence the emotions can't cope and us sick people get desperate and confused.
Everyones adrenals are different and they are made up of DHEA & Cortisol, in me both of these were low whereas some people have one lower or one really high etc, hence it is important to have a proper adrenal saliver test, and a doctor of some sort to interpret and give you options of what route to go down, just taking the supplements wouldn't necessarily help everyone.
The supplements I take have a mix of things in aswell as adrenals I believe from a bovine source - Thank you cow! Yet looking at the ingredients I wouldn't have thought it was anything special just another jar of minerals & vitamin supplements.
I hope this helps and wish your sister a full recovery
