Yes after his really bad flare that landed him in the hospital 4+ years ago he went on the Azathioprine which seemed to help somewhat and yes he could play golf but did need a handicapped sticker for the golf cart which helped him get through the 9 holes. When he finally got off the prednisone that made things better too.
Oct of 2009 things started to be weird again and went on the Remicade from Jan - May 2010 to no avail. Plus the pain management end of things needed some stepping up and really isn't cutting it so it is definitely time.
His local GI who we really love just told him straight up in June that she honestly feels it isn't a question of IF but WHEN this might become a cancerous situation and he should have colonoscopies every 6 months instead of annually to try to keep ahead of it. Since he is on the heaviest duty drugs, failed Remicade and now needing more pain medication she worries about it becoming a spontaneous situation and also dealing with a potential cancer situation. That resonated with him and while he is healthy (lol...somewhat insofar as surgery goes) he made up his mind then and there to proceed.
We have done a ton of research (amazing what is on YouTube) and I connected with someone (I call him our Angel) on the J-Pouch org. and once we took the unknown out of this and that then it was enlightening and not so scary. Here's hoping!
One minute I'm fine and the next minute I'm hysterical with worry. Once it is done and over with and we are dealing with it I think it will be a lot different.
