Have you tried using mesalamine enemas, both to gain remission, and to maintain remission? I have been in a solid remission for over a year, but am still using enemas twice weekly to maintain remission (in addition to Apriso, which is a mesalamine-based oral medication, like Asacol). I would NOT move on to 6MP before trying the enemas. Studies show that people who use them twice weekly, in addition to oral meds, stay in remission longer than those who only use oral meds. This is because the oral meds don't do a good job at treating the recutm, which is where flares start.
Status: Remission since May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son
Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09
Meds: Apriso (4 0.375g pills ONCE!! daily), mesalamine enema twice weekly, Natural Factors Ultimate probiotic 12/12 Formula, multivitamin. Used prednisone (starting dose 40 mg) to get into remission.
