My 79 yr old Dad had a very bad UC flare and was hospitalized for about 10 days, 10 days ago. He had a pic line with TPN and he was getting IV Solu-cort F. He was switched to 40 mg. Prednisone just before being released. His bleeding has completely stopped but his BMs are still extremely loose and watery and frequent. Is there anything he can do to firm up his stool?

He also has no appetite because of the UC. Is there anything he can do for this? So far the Pred isn't helping this.

Perhaps try soft foods, like pureed carrots.

As for the stool, you can try Metamucil or psyllium husk fiber. Try to avoid raw fruits and vegetables.

Sometimes "firming up" means eating more fiber but for a wounded colon that is difficult. Try Metamucil or Citrucel

Also D can be caused by foods moving too quickly through the damaged colon. Try Immodium to slooooow that down.

Check with his doctor about these ideas or ask this question of her/him. Some OTC stuff can affect medication.
Good news about the bleeding stopped, means the inflammation isn't as bad now but it will still take some time to heal.

I agree with no raw veggies, pureed carrots sounds perfect, don't overdo the fiber right away, baby steps.

I second Metamucil- the wafers are pretty good, I generally have 2 for brkfast daily. Soluble fiber will help him- oatmeal, peeled apples, fiber supps, etc.
diagnosed 2002
Remicade-10mgs/kg- from 4/07 thru 1/10
Imuran- 150mgs/day
homemade kefir, probiotic supplement, turmeric

I say psyllium husk over metamucil. Psyllium husk is more natural and dirt cheap.
In remission--pancolitis. 8 Asacol, Rowesa every other day- with symptoms daily - adding Canasa daily and Psyllium husk.
Align probiotic. Vitamins. Avoid greasy, fried, spicy, citrus, dairy (except yogurt), caffeine, alcohol. Bipolar/anxiety/depression: lamictal, Lexapro; Sleep-zinc magnesium B6--Zyprexa, klonopin if sleep regime fails.

Psyllium husk powder works like a charm for me. 1 heaping teaspoon in a glass of water twice a day.

I would avoid raw vegetables, whole grains, fruit skins, corn husks and other non water soluble fiber if I were him.
