I have received permission by Healingwell.com admin Peter Waite to post information about this study.

Are you following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to manage your inflammatory bowel disease?

Rush University Medical Center's Department of Gastroenterology is conducting a study to determine if the Specific Carbohydrate Diet changes the population of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract. This is a popular dietary program amongst patients, but there are no published studies on how the diet works. Your participation in this study will contribute to scientific knowledge regarding how diet can be used to manage the symptoms of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Participation will entail completing a series of surveys and mailing two stool samples and a urine sample.

We are currently looking for volunteers eight years of age or older with a formal diagnosis of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or indeterminate colitis. We need volunteers who are both on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and also volunteers who are not on the diet.

The principal investigator for this study is
Dr. Ece Mutlu, M.D.
Rush University Medical Center Department of Gastroenterology
1725 W. Harrison St. Ste. 207
Chicago, IL 60612
If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact

I am so excited about this study. Unfortunately I am in Australia so I can't help.
History:
[1st Oct 2010] First colonoscopy. Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis with inflammation in rectum.
[30th Nov 2010] Second colonoscopy. Confirmed ulcerative proctitis with mild inflammation in rectum and additional inflammation in cecum.
[10th Jan 2011] Third colonoscopy scheduled.

Current Meds:
- Pentasa suppositories (2 daily)
- Salofalk enemas (1 nightly)

I believe in SCD, I do well when I follow it but it is hard to follow it closely.

It would be nice if they prove that remaining ON the diet for 2 years after your last symptom sets you forever free of UC which is what Elaine says. That was her best guess because her mentor passed away before she could ask him how long to keep her daughter on it.

I will be emailing you. SCD is the basis for my diet so I believe I would qualify, I am more exclusive (meaning more foods are out) than SCD but hope that will be OK.

Am really heartened to see a study being done, especially one that examines the microbes in the gut. The results will be more accepted than a "softer" study of peoples reported symptoms on SCD.
In remission April 2010 after 10 years of UC with no remission ever
Jan 2010 began SpecCarbDiet (modified to remove dairy, fruit & juices,)
Gluten-free=bleeding stopped in 3 days, 95% remission in 5.5 months on SCD
SCDiet: Gluten/grain-free, starch-free, low carb, honey as sweetener
(9)Balsalazide+(6)Citrucel+VSL#3 daily, mesalamine enema as needed
Curcumin/turmeric pill, D3 5000, L-glutamine
