Howdy Katkat. As I understand it, if you have UC that requires surgery they typically remove the entire colon regardless of how far up the inflammation goes. I could be mistaken here; I had pancolitis so I didn't look into this to closely.
Finding the right surgeon can be hard. Ask questions about
what kind of experience they have with this specific surgery; if you don't like the answer, or can't get a straight answer, look into finding another surgeon. I didn't feel very comfortable with the colorectal surgeon at my normal hospital so I asked my GI for another referral. I was glad I did; the second surgeon I found out had way more experience with J pouches. There are also some places that specialize in this type of surgery that you may want to look into such as the Cleveland clinic. If you haven't already checked out the forums on Jpouch.org I would recommend you head there. I'm sure there are some people there that can offer better advice on finding a good surgeon than I can.
Surgery is a scary prospect. I was terrified that I would wake up from surgery and they would say they couldn't do the Jpouch for some reason and I would be stuck with a perm ostomy. Six weeks sans colon, and this isn't nearly as scary an idea as it once was. Though it can still be a pain in the butt now and again, the ostomy is worlds better than living with constant UC.
I will again mention Jpouch.org in case you haven't already checked it out. Just remember that the people who post there are usually the ones having problems, so don't get discouraged if you read some horror stories. Overall the satisfaction rate for Jpouch surgery is somewhere north of 90%. Good luck with whatever course you decide to pursue. At this point your best option is probably to research as much as you can about
your different options so you can make the choice that fits your lifestyle best when/if the time comes.
Edit: Cloud 9, I must say that the recovery isn't a walk in the park. I spent nine days in the hospital, and went home on some heavy pain meds. It was a solid three weeks before I was off the pain meds and eating everything I wanted.
