Hi friends, Im having a colonoscopy next week and was thinking of asking my doc for a script for Probiotics. If perscribed my insurance would pay for them and maybe they'll be better than what I currently buy??
Does anyone take prescriptive 'biotics?
What is the name? What are they called?
Thanks so much!

I think there is a prescription probiotic called VSL#3 DS. I am pretty sure it's a lot better than what we buy over the counter and probably cheaper if you have insurance. I am not sure if all insurance covers it. Most doctors don't prescribe it typically. I've only seen 2 or 3 people here that have a prescription.

Thanks very much for answering my post. I think this new GI doc will be into prescribing them. He seems pretty open to the other naturopathic stuff I'm doing - afterall it's a probiotic not a ...narcotic
Fingers crossed. I'm switching from an old GI to a new one. The old guy never even took any biopsies and his 'notes' were super unprofessional - even my GP shook her head.
thanks again,

My doctor prescribed VSL#3 DS (double strength) when I asked. Notsosicklygirl can bump up her count from 2 or 3 to 3 or 4. They're packets of powder that you dump into water or something else. Although the taste is pretty mild, the lemonish flavor somehow reminded me of colonoscopy preparations, and I couldn't stand it except in an occasional smoothie or something else to drown the taste. Now I'm paying $50 a bottle (actually about a third less because I claim them on a health spending account with doctor's note) for VSL#3 capsules, which have the same contents but in smaller doses, so you'd have to take more to match the packets.
