I just saw an Integrative healthcare doctor for my UC. He recommended taking a bath using 4 cups of Epson salts and showering afterwards. I usually do two hand fulls of Epson salts in a bath after exercising but this was GREAT!
I currently have my period so along with the normal flare cramping and gas I got other cramping and gas! The hot bath put me back to normal. I couldn't believe how good my belly felt. It lasted until the wee hours of the morning but this was the most pain free I've been in a long time! I didn't even have the urge to go!
So I googled Epson salt bath to learn how this helps. Apparently it detoxes your body and regulates over 325 enzymes. It help with osteoporosis and joint pain. Who knew there was so much more to benefit from Epson salts! It's a great way to get your fill of Magnesium and apparently we need a certain ration of magnesium to calcium supplements.
Here's the article I found: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/health-benefits-of-epsom-salt-baths.html

Most people are deficient in magnesium especially UCers like ourselves. Epsom Salt baths are an excellent way to absorb magnesium without overloading the digestive system and getting diarrhea.
For some people, myself included, one side effect of a flare can be crippling arthritis. During my last flare I tried Epsom salt baths to help relieve arthritis pain.

I love epsom salt baths! I never thought about
them for cramping. Yeah, I have another excuse to have some "Me" time in the bath. I usually only add about
2+ cups, so I'll add a bit more.
Why the shower afterward?

Shower afterward to rise the salt off. 4 cups is a lot of salt! It made the water a bit thick. I could see shadows from the currents in the water. It's good to rinse off to clear the pores. Then apply moisturizer. This really helps smooth the skin too!

I love epsom salt soaks, we always have a big "milk carton" of salts under the bathroom vanity. I've been taking them a lot lately, to help with the healing abscess I currently have. They are universally regarded as a good thing!

The quantity of mag absorbed from an epsom salt bath is very small, not nearly enough to meet the recommended daily intake. I use magnesium oil/spray for my body, pills, and sometimes do IM injections. I just can't get enough magnesium.
Magnesium, retinol (pre-formed vitamin A), and vitamin D are saviours in my protocol.

These 20 minute morning baths (then shower) are REALLY helping with the calming of my so sore butt hole.
I wonder why the internet says no more than three salt baths a week?
