Do any of you take anti-diarrhea OTC drugs to stop going to the bathroom all the time?? I work as a teacher and am finding it impossible to make it through the day!

I think it would be better to get your UC under control so you aren't having so much diarrhea. What meds are you using?
Status: Remission since May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son
Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09
Meds: Apriso (4 0.375g pills ONCE!! daily), mesalamine enema twice weekly, Natural Factors Ultimate probiotic 12/12 Formula, multivitamin.  Used prednisone (starting dose 40 mg) to get into remission.

I agree with getting things under control but I do rely on LOMOTIL to stop the trips to the washroom.  You do need a perscription for it but it works the best for me.  I take one in the morning after my BM"S and I am fine for the rest of the day.  It is an opiod so it might take getting use to it.  I have taken immodium but I find for me it gives me major gas pain and cramping, plus it is not covered by my drugplan so LOMOTIL is much cheaper if covered.

I am currently taking Asacol 3x day, so I am working on the disease, but am looking for relief of the symptoms. Thanks for the idea of LOMOTIL, I will check on that with my doctor.

I take imodium every day, that and narcotic pain meds. Morphine, Codeine, Vicodin, and even Tramadol work wonders as far as constipating me! I went from 30-40 bm's a day (I'm flaring) to only 10. Wish I knew what Remission was like!
DX 2/10 UP. DX 10/10 UC. Hospital 10/10, 01/11 dehydrated/anemic. Arthritis, sjogrens, very dry skin all came w/colitis. On Asacol 4800 mg (doesn't seem to be working!), Vicodin, Xanax, Imodium, Remicade since 01/15/11. I've tried Canasa, Prednisone, (doesn't help, just bad side effects!), Bentyl, Flagyl, Morphine/codeine sulfate, Imuran, Prozac, Tramadol

I take about three immodium to equal what one lomitil would do for me. Immodium won't give you horrid dry mouth or make you loopy, so it's not a bad choice. You can find generic form at Big Lots or dollar store and get it cheap.
Proctitis DX 1999, Pancolitis DX 2008
Remicade, Sulfasalazine 3g/day, Rear meds as needed
Psyllium (palm full twice daily)
Probiotis/VitD3 5000IU+Ca/1000mg DHA

You need to also get on rectal meds. Ask for mesalamine retention enemas...NOT the suppositories.

That will help heal the rectum.

Do NOT take the Lomotil consistently, it will give you false sense of "things are better".
Dr, A....didn't the lomotil have you feeling stoned?  smurf
*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.
Status: ...Asacol 3 @ 2x daily; Salofalk enema @ 3rd night (nightly/ flares, tapered/maintenance)
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol 20mg as needed; Zantac 150mg; Symbicort/Airomir (asthma);Effexor XR 37.5 (depression)
~vitamins/minerals/supplements; Probiotics....(RenewLife Ultimate Flora Critical Care+Primadophilus Reuteri capsules @ bedtime)
~Metamucil capsules 6 twice daily with meals; Vitamin D 4000 IU
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS" worth it !!!

For a very short period of time if I had to take two at once. Usually about 30 min or so.

Imodium is the only over the counter medication that will help with the diarrhea. Your doctor can prescibe lomotil or belladonna alkaloids at his discretion. I agree, once you get control of the flare, the diarrhea should resolve.
Pharmacist as of 6/12/2009.
Diagnosed 8/99. Suffered for almost 10 years. I am currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and am nearing remission. I feel fantastic! I have lossed so many years to this disease.

Doc wanted to put me on 6-mp or Remicade, but I refused to take the medications! Currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  I'm in remission and life is like it always should have been.
