I've never had a flare last as long as the current one, about 3 months now. In the past, only had a few and never lasted that long and diet never seemed to have an effect in the past.
I'm really ready for this to get over with and I'm experimenting at this point.

Everyone's flare is different, some have D, some have C, some have bleeding, some don't. There is not one answer that fits all so you have to describe your symptoms and then people can respond.

"In general" probiotics are good but sometimes you have to try a couple different to get one that helps and doesn't cause unwanted symptoms (gas, bloating).

"In general" fiber is good and many people like Metamucil but for some fiber can cause problems.

Diet is a very broad field and not answerable by "What can I eat?". Start keeping a food journal and noticing what your gut does. Sometimes it's not immediate, might be the next day. Sometimes you think "Aha, my gut quieted down, that's good" only to find out that whatever you ate caused massive constipation (C). It's trial and error.
Good luck, it's worth it but hard work being your own detective.

I think imagardener2 nailed it.

I personally do take the probiotics every day, flare or not. My experience is that probiotics help when I'm experiencing a flare up.

Good luck to ya.

   Posted 6/13/2011 11:59 AM (GMT -7)'s subjective and trial and error. Personally, I'd NEVER now go without probiotics or fibre supplements. I've found what works.

I think trying different products is a good thing also.

Food has no effect on my UC, and I've pushed it to the limit. I do definitely get discomfort, however, from some foods.

Medications is a for sure....

*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.
Status: ...Asacol 3 @ 2x daily; Salofalk enema @ 3rd night (nightly/ flares, tapered/maintenance)

I wouldn't ever give up my probiotic or fibre supplement even if I went into full my GI said, take them both indefinitely (along with my bee propolis). So yes, flaring or not you should stick with them both daily since it may keep more severe flares from happening.
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.
~~~~~~~~My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)~~~~~~~~
This is a tough one! I have been taking my metamucil and probiotic during this very stressfully months flare but I start getting cramps about 10 minutes after I take the Metamucil while in this flare!
I'm going to back off a few days and start taking it again after my colin settles down....
What was it that got you out of your last flares, and did you keep up with that during remission? It's always a mistake to quit what you were doing that got you to remission. That could be why you continue having more flares and they often get harder and harder to treat so the best thing to do is continue doing what got you to remission in the first place, forever so that you never have another flare. One of those things should be to continue taking probiotics, particularly if they were part of what got you to remission.
I used to only take 1billion probiotic, but I upped to a 50 billion and will stay in that for eternity. During my flare and constant diarrhea it was suggested to me to add fibre supplements by a few people on this board. I tried it and found great benefit in firming up my poops. I will stay on these for eternity too.
Meds:Asacol HD 3/day. Elavil 10mg/day. Supplements: Probiotic (ultimate flora 50billion) 4 Metamucil caps/day. I dont eat anything packaged/processed, real whole foods only. Diagnosis:First Colonoscopy (dec2013)showed inflammation/ulcers but biopsy had no markers, so no IBD diagnosed yet. IBS-D for 10+ years.
