Hello All!

I am in need of some advice. I have ulcerative colitis (I was diagnosed in 99). I am a 26 year old female who is healthy beyond the UC. I had a flare up for about 1 year starting in Oct 2009, but I am now on Azathioprine and in remission :)

Anyways, I just graduated college in May and I now work for a non-profit that does not offer health insurance. I tried applying for an individual policy through United Healthcare and Aetna but was denied coverage.

I am somewhat at a loss and am scared! Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you all!!!!!!!!

May look into your state and see if they have any high risk pool plans.

The private insurances can basically do whatever they want.

I was never able to get private insurance with this conditon. I agree with Dr A. You could also try going through an HMO like Kaiser, I've heard they may insure you but the coverages won't be too good and the remiums will be high. It's really unfair :( Your company, non-profit or not should be offering health insurance.

You can also try looking here: http://finder.healthcare.gov/

You might also check with your local Chamber of Commerce. They often have group insurance for those like you who work in a community business but with no health coverage.

It may not help you now but the new healthcare legislation will soon allow those of us with pre-existing conditions the ability to purchase private policies. I am sure when the phase in for this portion takes affect though. It could be now through 2014. Hopefully someone that knows more will be along shortly.
