I have had chronic diarrhoea for two and a half years. I sort help from my doctor after suffering for about ten months and was subsequently diagnosed with microscopic lymphocytic colitis. Microscopic because it can only be diagnosed after a cell biopsy and looking through a microscope. Lymphocytic - to many white blood cells. Colitis - inflammation of the colon.
I have to assume that this was brought about by stress, family illness, as I can find in my research no reasons given for the onset of this problem. My symptoms have not reduced in any way during the couple of years that I have had it. I cut dairy and wheat products out of my diet, the dairy was reintroduced after about six months with no change, I still have no wheat. I am prescribed Budesonide 3mg X3 a day which seem to regulate my symptoms enabling me to go about my daily life - sometimes. If there is any change to my routine my life becomes messy and embarrassing! I have never taken any form of pharmaceuticals/drugs in my life before and find this quite difficult, I have started taking Imodium to help me through social events but unfortunately they give me stomach cramps. I really don't know what to do next.

Why don't you try out the 5-ASAs? They are the safest of the IBD meds and many find the rectal meds like Rowasa to be especially effective.

You may be allergic to other triggering foods besides wheat. For me it is shellfish, plums, kale, hummus, and high fructose corn syrup, but everyone is different. A food diary can help you isolate problem food, if that is your problem.

And of course most of us take supplements. Probiotics and soluble fiber such as psyllium are the most popular. Fish oil, boswellia, vitamin D, and curcumin are also helpful for some of us. Antibiotics are what actually knocked out my flare and many are using LDN with success. Check out the threads, this forum is a wealth of information. For example:

You may have more luck on this forum for people specifically with microscopic colitis:

holistic lady,

As someone who doesn't want to take drugs, I well understand your reticence.

Have you given any thought to:

1) LDN - low dose naltrexone, almost no side effects and very good results

2) Probiotics, VSL #3 is great

3) Adding slippery elm powder

4) which diet are you on? Perhaps you should start a food journal, no?

5) Had your vit. D levels checked?

The best place in the world for information and support for LC and CC (MC) is the link from Beach Girl. (Persky Farms)

You don't have to have meds at all............

Me, too. I am much older though. I am controlling it (mostly) by diet alone, no meds.

Hello
Two years ago, I was diagnosed with Microscopic Colitis/Lymphocytic Colitis.
The road to getting a diagnosis was long & frustrating.
I was told by my GI doctor that this is a rare disease. That it can be put into remission.
The GI doctor I have put me on a steroid for 12 weeks along with a pill called Dicyclomine 20MG tabs. I take 4 times daily, breakfast, lunch, dinner then bedtime.
Initially, after the first round of the steroid, I began to feel better so decided to stop taking the dicyclomine tablets. Big mistake. My body went right back to the 24-7 diarrhea mode with pain, fatigue and inflammation. It is very debilitating.
What I did not realize at the time I chose to stop taking this, was I needed to be on Dicyclomine (per my GI doctor) most likely for the rest of my life. I then had to repeat yet another 12 weeks of the steroid. This steroid was very strong. It did work. Went back into a "remission". It does come & go now but is not AS severe. It all depends.
I am hanging in there. Watching my foods as best I can.
I found this forum while looking for information about rare diseases. Thought I'd share my short story here to see if others are experiencing similar?
I also have Fibromyalgia with overlapping symptoms of chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome & from that over many years, I developed IBS. This disease, Microscopic Colitis/Lymphocytic Colitis came in last 2 years. However, it is important to know that my GI doctor did say I had gone undiagnosed for a very long time.
It is hard to determine what symptoms go with what. It's easy to attribute a symptom to another diagnosed disease. For example IBS. For years I thought this was my issue. And, it is in fact affected by this colitis.
