Eva....you will KNOW when you are ready for surgery. When you say to yourself...."I've HAD it!!!" When all the meds, within reason, fail, when you become prednisone dependent and you know it is slowly killing you. That's the time for surgery.
Those were my exact words one morning that I woke and I KNEW it was time for surgery: "I've had it, I'm so done!" Yes, you will know for sure when/if that time comes. I didn't have surgery because I was afraid of the cancer risk (was in the back of mind though). I had it because I was at death's door and I had zero quality of life.
DX UC - in 2005 when I was 37
Tried every drug-even Remicade-Tried diets-nothing worked-wanted my life back!
Step 1: J-pouch surgery (Laparoscopic restorative proctocolectomy w/ temporary diverting loop ileostomy) 6-25-10
Step 2: Take down surgery (Ileostomy reversal) 10/8/10
No more UC!!! Very happy with my results of this surgery-got my life back! :)
