Prednisone is very effective for initially snuffing out inflammation but should be used only for the SHORT TERM such as until your taper ends. It definitely should not be considered for long term maintenance.
I believe that everyone diagnosed with UC should avoid gluten foods such as wheat and barley for a week or two and see if symptoms improve. The other two mainstays are rectal meds such as Rowasa enemas and probiotics. After that you can peruse our signatures to see specifics for what works for us individually.
