i work in a pediatric medical facility for kids, and i spoke to the dietician here about protein shakes , gut healing etc.  Her area of expertise is not with uc but she works with immunocromprised kids and kids who need advanced nutrition for wound healing.  also, 95% of our kids here are on gtube feedings.   I asked her what she thought of protein powders for colonic healing.  her response was that it  would be like building a house without all the materials.  her feeling is that along with proteins, vitamins and minerals are key (zinc, etc)  she said that they use a supplement here called   Vitament.  I dlooked it up online it is quite expensive but it got me thinking about an all in one type product.  I was wondering if anyone here uses something like that or has had expereince with it.  just googling on line i  found 2 products, would LOVE to hear everyones thoughts on these or other similair type products, thanks

my nutritionist recommended that i take these two supplements together:

"vitamineral green" and "earth a sacred healing foods"

they are both by the company Health Force Nutritionals. they are raw, vegan, and gluten-free.

i will be honest. the taste is something you just have to get used to. i drink them with my morning orange juice. i mix both supplements together in a glass of water with my psyllium powder.

the only downfall is that they are really expensive. the quality is so great so you get what you pay for.

I use something called UltraInflamx. It's a powder that is designed for people with UC. It's basically a mutli-vitamin with extra Vitamin A, it has L-Glutamine, L-Systine, Turmeric, Ginger, Rosemary. It has not gluten, dairy, soy , artificial sweeteners, or nuts. I take 2 scoops a day mixed with water. Can't say it worked any miracle but seems to have a calming effect on my gut. It was recommended by my Naturopath doctor. Its a little pricey at around $64 for a months supply.
Dx with pancolitis Aug 2010; took 14 months to get in remission; Curr Meds: Asacol, Mesalamine Enemas; Supplements: VSL #3, Turmeric, UltraInflamx, Phoschol, Fish Oil, Ground Flax Seed, Calcium, D3; Diet: following low FODMAP, nor dairy, no sulfites, no carageenan, no alcohol, no sugar alcohols.

ilovecoffee,

The first one contains casein - which might create problems if you have an allergy to it?

The second one, natures plus, seems to have an overload of Vit. A, and I would be concerned about some of the ingredients in the white whole food blend: bananas, potato, pear, oat bran - so it's not gluten free.

That's just my opinion.

As you may know, I am a strong believer of supplementing with good quality whey protein shakes ( I have at least 2 a day) which I make with almond milk and a whole bunch of supplements and liquid minerals and liquid vitamins thrown in as well.  I love my Dr. Mercola's Pro-Optimal Whey Protein, because they come from grass-fed cows, no antibiotics, no hormones, and already have digestive enzymes in them - which makes them easily digestible and I find them very soothing to my gut.

Dx - UC 09/2010.Tried various Mesalamine enemas/suppos/pills with Prednisone for several rounds without any help.PaleoDiet of proteins,veggies,salads, fruits, & protein shakes w/almond milk, Liquid Minerals& Vitamins,Maca powder,L-Glutamine 15g, D-Ribose 5g,L-ArgEthylEster,chia seeds,VSL#3,K2,VIt. D3 100,000 IU every 10 days.Transdermal LDN put me remission!

My only concern in all this business is, the manufacturers promote what it says on the paper about the ingredients but hardly anyone provides proof that the contents are still there in final product after it has gone through 'processing'. And they expect me to pay such a hefty price!! If you can stand otherwise, I will rather supplement using organic vegetable sources/home-made juices. The enzymes can be supplemented using products like Digest Spectrum (or many others in the market) for cheap.
Diagnosed March 2007 with left sided UC at the age of 30.
Currently on,
Colazal 9 daily, Imuran, 200mg daily, Vit. B12, 1mg, Multivitamin, 1 tablet daily, Fish oil 2400mg daily, Vit D 2000 IU daily.

Verapamil 240mg for migraine, Migraine episode now at least twice a month,
Ibuprofen 400mg is the only solution (but leads to bleeding). Looking for alternatives.

Hi, I would like to share my comment on your concern regarding providing gtube immunocompromised kids with protein powder which contain multi-vitamins and minerals. Let me give you some background of myself, so my opinion can have some weight. I have a degree in molecular biology and had worked in both pharmaceutical and biotech companies for at least three years. And I also have strong background in nutritional science and worked at the USDA as a volunteer. Personally I do take protein supplement as well as vitamin supplements (but in low dosage). I am taking two other vitamin supplements from Nature's plus. But it is not the protein powder you mentioned. The reason I don't purchase that one is because the vitamin dosage is too high even for healthy adults (from my point of view). Even kids with nutritional deficiency should not be fed with high dosage of vitamin supplement and mineral as our body doesn’t just rely on those vitamins and minerals to sustain life. Over loading with healthy individuals with vitamin/mineral supplement can cause toxicity symptoms over time. Even slightly excess amount of vitamin and minerals (not needed by the body) are treated as wastes by healthy individuals to be excreted from the body. Individuals with poor health, such as the immunocompromised children, already have improper internal function. I am worried that those two products will pose danger to the kids due to the high amount of vitamins and minerals that the children might not be able to handle/tolerate or be able to excrete the excess amount of vitamins/minerals.     On the other hand, I do support the idea that those children need extra vitamin supplements/minerals. But my recommendation is 25% to 50% of the RDA to begin with. No matter what, I don’t recommend that even healthy adults to consume high dosage of vitamin supplements and minerals.   I don’t know if the 5% kids not on gtube feeding can drink soup. Feed them with vegetable broth (just the liquid part) I think is also helpful than putting them on high dosage of vitamin /mineral supplements. Vegetable broth – I mean per person (may be a tomato + ¼ onion + 1 cup cabbage + other vegetable) boiled first, and then simmer for 15 mins to half an hour or one hour depend on the ingredients (simmering for too long will destroy some vitamin and anti-oxidants). Then just feed the children with the liquid part. Cooked organic brown rice à blended with a blender or make brown rice porridge can minimize digestion and help absorption.   The two products (vitamin C and vitamin D) from nature’s plus I purchased did come with a certificate of Analysis (from a laboratory named Intertek). So I assume Nature’s plus pays a third party to verify the ingredients. And this is one of the reasons I buy vitamin supplements from nature’s plus. However, I don’t know about the protein powder you mentioned.   Again, if the immunocomprised kids will not be able to handle the high dosage of vitamin supplement, it will make their conditions worse over time due to chronic toxicity (which is much more difficult to diagnose than acute toxicity). Healthy adults who take vitamin supplements always run into some symptoms of vitamin toxicity. Usually they just stop taking the vitamin supplement without reporting. Vitamin supplement overdose in fact is more common than people can imagine.
