Have had colitis for 20 years, with only one major flare-up 10 years ago. Took remicade for that and had horrific reaction and ended up in ICU for 5 weeks and another 5 weeks in the hospital healing. Anyway, because of that huge flareup, I have hundreds of pseudo polyps and my GI says that the colonoscopy is no longer effective to screen me for colon cancer. Considering Jpouch surgery now, feel like there are no good options.
Just wanted to wish you luck with your decision. It's a hard one to make but once it's all said and done, it's great to be done with UC for good. I had J pouch surgery 2 years ago and I'm soooooo very happy I made that decision. Well, I really didn't have much of a choice left but I was stubborn about
it for a few years before making the decsision...wish I did it sooner. I can imagine this is especially hard for you being that you were not too sick from the UC but you don't want to mess around with the strong possibility of colon cancer. Best wishes.
DX UC in 2005. Family history of UC.
Tried every drug-even Remicade-Tried diets-nothing worked-wanted my life back!
Step 1: J-pouch surgery (Laparoscopic restorative proctocolectomy w/ temporary diverting loop ileostomy) 6-25-10
Step 2: Take down surgery (Ileostomy reversal) 10/8/10
No more UC and no more drugs!! Very happy with my results of this surgery-got my life back! :)
