I was taking some diphenhydramine yesterday to help me sleep. This night when I woke up my stools looked fine (formed and bright brown) and about an hour ago it changed to black and became softer. I just now had another bm and it looked black and it was d. Can the sleep aid be the cause? Is it harmful? I read the side effects but I couldn't see anything about stools or UC.

Edit: I don't plan to stay on sleep aid for a longer time. I just switched to night shift and needed sleep badly sad

I take a sleep aid every night due to chronic insomnia but it never messes with my Uc. I take diphenhydramine as well.

It could be the enema you are using. When I was on them, they would sometimes turn my stool black. It depends on how long it was on the shelf. They are still good, but the longer they sit, the more it they "oxidize" or something like that.

Or it could also be old blood that turned your stool black.

If that was just enema which came out I'd be so glad. The exp. date is still good till 2013.

Isn't it crazy how much we exam our poop?! lol I don't think you have anything to worry about unless you continue to have black stool, like every time. Than you should contact your doctor. Also you have to remember that certain foods can make your stool black as well.

Seems like I read somewhere that some have used Zyrtec or some other antihistime as a treatment for UC and had some success with it. I have noticed that activity revs up my bowels more and I have an easier time when I'm asleep, resting, or not moving much. I can't answer your question on the color change.
Asacol 400mgs 2 pills X 4; VSL#3 112.5mgs 2 pills X 4; Vitamin D 5000 ius 1 pill X 2; DGL 400mgs 1 pill X 3

Didn't do anything: Prescription - Glycopyrrolate; Natural - enteric peppermint oil, Boswellia, Pepto Bismol, Omega 3 fish oil, Beano, Lactaid

Discontinued: Slippery Elm - meds were just passing through, Immodium - making me feel constantly constipated in beginning and now have solid BMs

I take the same thing nightly in the hopes it will make me sleepy. It doesn't really but it also keeps my hives at bay so I keep taking it. Never noticed any change in frequency or color of stool from it.

I take it every evening and it doesn't seem to help or worsen my symptoms; though if I take a liquid form of it with 10% alcohol I do seem to have a problem with worsening symptoms. Must be all the sugar and the alcohol they put in the liquid stuff. You could also try the Unisom tablets (not gelcaps) which has another kind of antihistamine and see if you have any changing symptoms.
I've tried every drug. Remicade works some, but doesn't put me into complete remission. Was diagnosed in 2008, but started a horrific flare in 2010 and have been in this flare ever since. I'm somewhat stable and able to work full time.

Currently off all meds waiting for Humira to become FDA approved. Can no longer afford Remicade. Also taking a probiotic 2x daily (VSL#3 capsules)
