This is the first time I have ever posted anything on this site (joined 4 min. ago) but I really want to share some things that have seriously changed my life.
Bit about me: I'm a 34 year old female, diagnosed with UC when I was 20. I've been on Asacol, Prednizone, 6MP and every enema under the sun! After I was diagnosed with colitis I started having all kinds of other problems: frequent UTI, yeast infections, consistent itchy skin, eczema, worse and worse menstrual periods, etc. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about! Well, hopefully only the women for some of those.
This past summer my face started itching so and I started breaking out with what looked like acne and I've never had acne in my life! I went to the dermatologist and he said I have Rosacea (I first typed Rowasa- go figure!). And if anyone has ever googled pictures of Rosacea it is not pretty. I was told it was a chronic condition (yet another!) that could be managed with medication. I lost it. It was the final straw for me. I live in NYC and am an actor. I've dealt with the rushing to find a bathroom (and not making it) right before an audition but at least I walked in with clear skin! I knew something was seriously wrong because every system in my body seemed to be breaking down. It was at this point I decided to see a homeopathic doctor. Why not? Nothing else had worked.
I have to admit I was skeptical. I'm all for chamomile tea and aloe vera but knowing that 16 pills of asacol, 60 mg of prednisone and 3 enemas a day didn't work, why would some random herbs and drops do the trick!?
This is the gist of what I've found out. My colon isn't working properly and is completely inflamed- well, clearly! Since mine isn't working other systems have to help out thus resulting in major havoc on every other system. So, I'm on the path to eliminating all inflammation in my diet while at the same time rebuilding good bacteria and cells to hopefully "cure" .....I know, I'm weary but it actually seems to be working!!
So, the first thing I did was go on an anti-inflammatory diet. Which basically means I can't eat anything.
I can't eat: banannas, dates, figs, raisins, grapes, mangos, all dried fruit (no sugar pretty much!), white potatoes, eggplant, creamed veg., meatloaf, baked beans, no peppers of any kind, corn, barley, spelt, kamut, rye (any product containing gluten!), tofu, soybeans, soy milk (any product made from soy!) peanuts, peanut butter, roasted nuts, beef, pork frankfurters, sausage that isn't 100% chicken of turkey, canned meats, smoked meats, shellfish, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, cream, yogurt, ice cream, non dairy creamers, butter, margarine, shortening, processed and hydrogenated soils, canola oil, mayo, soda, alcohol, fruit juice, coffee, caffeinated tea, chocolate, ketchup, relish, chutney, soy sauce, BBQ sauce, white or brown sugar, honey, brown rice syrup, cane juice, maple syrup, barley malt, date syrup, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, carob.
So, I'm currently starving to death. No! It's not that bad......after awhile :)
I CAN have apples, pears, berries, kiwi, lemons, limes, watermelon, avocado, all veggies except those listed above, rice, millet, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, teff, puffed amaranth, puffed millet, sweet potatoes, sprouted grain breads, tempeh, all beans but no soy beans, raw nuts and raw nut butters but no peanut butter, fresh and frozen fish, free range chicken, turkey, wild game, lamb, rice and almond milk, coconut and almond yogurt (don't do it! It tastes awful!), coconut oil, unrefined olive, flaxseed, sunflower, sesame, walnut, grapeseed or almond oil, herbal tea, coconut water, salt, pepper, cinnamon, cumin, dill, garlic, ginger, oregano, parsley, rosemary, tarragon, arrowroot, apple cider vinegar, stevia, fruit juice sweeteners (on occasion), blackstrap molasses (what the heck is this?)
So, for breakfast I have egg whited with veggies in a brown rice wrap or gluten free oatmeal with a tablespoon of almond/sunflower seed butter. If I feel like being decadent I have a brown rice wrap with sunflower seed butter and turkey bacon! I found that I have to warm the brown rice warps on the stove for about 5-7 sec. each side so they become soft.
Lunch and Dinner is a turkey salad or turkey wrap in brown rice wrap with spinach, avocado, and other veggies or fish with a quinoa salad or fish with rice and a salad. Snacks are nuts, avocados, frozen blueberries and raspberries save me! Sometimes I sit down and eat a whole bag! No joke. Peppermint tea all day!
I was a MAJOR Coffee drinker so this was really hard. I was also a MAJOR red wine drinker so these were kinda hard to break. I still cheat maybe once a week but feel the effects which helps me get right back on track.
In addition to the diet I take HMF Probiotic Supplement, kalium muriaticum 6X, calcarea sulfurica 6X, natrium muriaticum 6X, unda 4, unda 48, unda 50, and apply castor oil packs at night. (All homeopathic remedies). I'm taking 1 asacol a day. I've tapered down from 8 a day.
I have been on this treatment for 3 months. All cramps and bloating went away within the first couple weeks, I've had diarrhea only twice (right before big auditions), the rosasea and eczema cleared up (first time in years I haven't had to use topical cream for my face), I haven't had one UTI/yeast infection (they used to be almost monthly), my periods are normal!! I used to take 4 midol 3 times a day for days and now nothing!!
Everyone's body is different. I just wanted to share my story because if any of this could help anyone else I would be happy! My aunt has Chron's and started the diet alone and her diarrhea stopped after a week. If I can share anything else I would be happy to! Or, if you live in NYC and want to meet for herbal, decaf tea let me know!
Hope you have a good day!!!
