I did the SCD first, but when I started it the first time, I didn't do the intro diet fully, I sort of just jumped right in to whatever was on the allowed foods list. BUT when I did this and cut all the grains from my diet, I noticed that my daily belly gas went away, and I liked that. I don't remember loosing too much weight on this diet, but it also wasn't really doing much for me (I did it for a full 6 months before I abandoned ship). I stayed gluten-free for another couple of months, eating occasional grains like rice and corn, and then decided to try the GAPS diet. FOr this one I started with the intro diet and took lots of notes/food journaling, and lost between 5 and 10 pounds, which I really couldn't afford to do. I actually started the GAPS diet again more recently and managed not to loose any weight, mostly because I was being more careful about
eating more (when you're just eating broth and coooked veggies, you have to eat a LOT of them) and eating enough fats too to be sure I was getting enough calories.
I have found gluten-free to be a good thing, though it can be tough, especially when traveling, holidays, and potlucks... but as long as I am the one cooking, it's pretty easy. Gluten is everywhere, as you know, so I have become an obsessive label reader. I don't buy anything that contains sugar or anything that I don't think is a "real" food, which rules out most packaged foods.
My husband used to eat about 4 or 5 slices of bread every day. When I stopped buying bread, he just stopped eating it, and says he's really surprised that he doesn't miss it. Yea! (though now he goes through nuts like crazy)
My kids are still pretty young so they just have to go along with the "well, we don't have any of that food in the house so you can't have any"
