It's important to know that prednisone is not a cure. It will never cure you. UC is an autoimmune disease where your immune system is attacking your colon, causing inflammation. Prednisone weakens your immune system and stops the attack, allowing your colon time to heal. It is very bad to take prednisone forever as it will wind up doing more damage than the UC itself. Once your colon is healed and you taper down and off the prednisone your body will resume it's attack on the colon all over again and you will be back to square one. While on prednisone you have to make sure that you do some other kind of maintanence therapy such as Asacol, enemas, or other things so that once you taper off the pred you have something else going to help keep you in remission. If you are succesful at this you need to make sure you keep up your maintanence treatments forever, no matter how good you feel. Future flares often become harder and harder to treat so the objective is to have a maintanence plan if place forever so that you never have another flare.
