Hello- I'm new to the site and fairly new to UC. I am an 18 year-old female. Prepare for a semi-long post. How it all began
I'd like to start off by saying that there is no history of bowel disease in my family, and before last year, I'd always had completely normal stools and bathroom habits. Last year, in the September of 2011, I contracted a severe Salmonella infection that raged for about
2 weeks, and ended in a 2-day hospitalization. My symptoms included some vomiting, lots and lots of diarrhea, fever, chills, weight loss (about
15 pounds), etc. The Salmonella eventually made its way out of my body, but many of its symptoms persisted. For the past year, I've dealt with a very mild form of UC (officially diagnosed by my doctor earlier this year) and I have had very loose, watery stools and extreme urgency (has resulted in accidents). However, I have felt next to no pain, and there has been no blood, meaning that this is a very mild case. I also only gained back five of the fifteen pounds lost from the original Salmonella infection.
My doctor's theory is that I was already predisposed to UC, and it was triggered by my Salmonella. I have a difficult time believing this, seeing as I was completely fine before my infection and have no history of IBD in my family. Attempts at treatment
When the spring of 2012 rolled around, my mother realized that my post-infection symptoms were persisting for a suspiciously long time (doctor said it can take a few months for Salmonella symptoms to go away). Got tested, turned out I had C. diff from my hospitalization, and was put on Flagyl. This served as a bit of a red herring, as I felt a lot
better on this medication (less urgency). But, after the C. diff was confirmed to have left my system, I had to stop taking Flagyl and quickly felt my symptoms again. After the official UC diagnosis in the summer, and a colonoscopy, I was put on Lialda, and then a Lialda-Flagyl mix in addition to an enema. I felt better in terms of urgency but still had no solid stools. I was on this medication for most of the fall of this year, and stopped it two weeks ago.
For the last two weeks I've been taking Prednisone, which I've heard horrible, horrible stories about
. But, my doctor only plans to have me on it for a a short amount of time, just to quickly stop inflammation, and I have been successively tapering off from 40mg (40mg the first week, 30 the next, 20 this week, then going down by 5mg). With this steroid, I'm feeling the best that I've felt in a year- no urgency, and real, very solid stools! I've been gaining my weight back, and going to the bathroom at decently spaced intervals, like a normal human. No side effects yet, besides increased hunger and a little more energy. I know that this will change if I continue to take the medication for a longer period of time.
The next course of medication is to try Imuran. I'm not sure how I feel about
this, because I know that it has serious health risks involving cancer. The Gist
Thank you for reading. I'd like to know what your experiences are involving a similar situation and if you have any comments/stories concerning a)the idea of getting UC from Salmonella and b)successful medication tactics.
