Weight gain will happen once your uc has healed enough to allow it. How long does it take exactly until you can gain weight? Well, it varies person to person and really depends on how quickly you are healing. It could be a few months, it could be six months, could be more until you can gain weight it is really hard to say without knowing what your current level of inflammation is (how many times are you pooping each day?, has your GI looked up there via flexible-endoscope and seen much inflammation?).
If you are down to just a couple bms a day then you are pretty well healed and it would make sense to try eating extra calories for a few weeks and see if it works. I had to consume extra calories in order to gain weight; it didn't happen naturally on its own. When I was finally able to gain weight it was at a rate of a pound or two a week, but it was consistent. It took me a couple months to get back to a better weight after a loss of about
30 pounds when I initially got uc. I was probably at the 6 month mark before I was able to regain anything.
Now, I am in the middle of a flare, and I went from 136.5 pounds down to 123.5 pounds. I think I have mostly bottomed out, only loosing weight very slowly now. But with 6 bms a day my odds of regaining weight now are zero. I'm going to wait until things heal more.
If you are interested, here are a couple of my posts regaining weight loss and gain from late last year. They had a fair number of replies from others having the same difficulties:
