As a total newbie to this site, please forgive me if this has been discussed before or in other ways. I did a search through the discussions but didn't find anything that stayed on my question. I was diagnosed July 2012 after 6 months of suffering and then started on Asacol 800 MG twice a day plus Cortenema. My symptoms subsided although never completely disappeared (at least I got some life back) and then this past Christmas I started to flare again. I was weaning off the Cortenema at the time but when I tried to go up to once a day again I couldn't hold the material long enough to even use it. My GI decided to change tacks and put me on a three week Prednisone taper and started me on Azathrioprine 50 mg times 2 once a day.

I understand that it take a while to kick in and after 18 days or so I got a crazy stomach ache high up ( too out of it to note left or right), extreme fatigue, lethargy, nausea, heartburn and headache. After 24 days and changing to taking it late in the day, it seems a lot better but is that normal?

Now here's what i really would love to know. I also got a horrible taste in my mouth. Everything tasted like sawdust with a metal shaving booster, just awful. The Asacol prevents me from using an antacid so the heartburn continues as well.

Anybody have the same bad taste issue? I'm off the prednisone now and things are starting to change so I'm hopeful but that was a bad memory I'd prefer not to repeat.

Currently: Asacol 3200mg/day, Azathioprine 100mg/day, daily Cortenema

Yes, I got it as well. Not only that but my appetite was so terrible due to the nausea. It subsided after 3-4 months of taking it. You should check w/ your doctor to see if it's having any adverse reactions on your body.

I am not on it now though.

Hi..welcome to the forum!

how does asacol prevent you from using an antacid? or a ppi for that matter?

Seems Imuran/aza can cause bitter/metallic taste...listed as side effects from others' experiences (google search).

I have not noticed that side-effect (currently on 125 mg daily). Sorry not much help.

AZA didn't do that to me, but starting paleo diet gave me the most horrible taste in my mouth. In the end I realised it was ketosis (google it). Have you been eating enough or not eating any carbs?

Quincy, I was in conversation with the pharmacist and he told me that Asacol needs to reach the area of the bowel with the correct PH so that the coating dissolves late enough to do its job. Apparently if you take the wrong antacid or one that changes the ph radically, the Asacol coating will dissolve in the wrong place and the drug will be ineffective. That's also why you wouldn't break the tablet.
I could be wrong and it would be great to be able to deal with the heartburn for sure.
bettylou, I'm in a pretty restricted food regimen right now trying to get the flare under control. Carbs are in right now.
In any case, I really appreciate the fast answers already. Make me feel better to know people read and care.

I have the same metallic taste thing from imuran and prednisone right now...

What helps me the most that I have found is brushing my teeth twice, and my tongue forever - then lysterine mouth wash swishing it around for a long time...

I sorta do this routine for two days and it lessons or goes away, but comes back if I stop or don't brush my tongue/ use lysterine a few times a day.

Could it be thrush caused by pres/aza use? Had it before on large doses.

You can take a PPI...it won't release in the stomach, and the stomach acid doesn't go to alkaline level with a PPI.

I've been on Zantac for many years. I was also on Pariet....no disses from my GI, so you should use whatever for your heartburn. No use in eroding your esophagus for something that's really not a fact.

Besides...asacol doesn't release until the terminal ileum...a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG way from the stomach.
