canadamom, you could try giving him some chamomile tea for the pain, and at before bed he could supplement with 1tsp of slippery elm in water to form a mucous lining in the gut.
Maybe go easy on hard to digest foods, dairy, whole grains and nuts, gassy sulpheric foods like garlic and onion and fibrous foods like leafy greens (tolerable), and sugar.
