poznick, blood transfusions are definitely scarey. it seems doctors like to scare you with them. i've gotten the same phone calls from my doctor, too. get to the ER, NOW!
i've had 3 so far, but my doctor, again, called last week and told me the same thing. i didn't go to the ER just because i didn't feel like it. i told him i'd go in if i felt bad. i don't notice the blood either so i am always shocked when i get the dreaded call.
you can take iron but most people don't absorb much of what is in pills. i'd get some spatone iron. it's liquid and gentle on your gut. i buy it at walgreen's.
Current: 2-4 bms/day- very anemic/low hemoglobin
