So I guess in all the wonderfulness of being a mess, I have not only low blood protein and hemoglobin, but am struggling with thrush that doesnt seem to quite go away.

Im assuming I need less carbs and sugars, and have admittedly gotten back to eating that, though I am still pounding the protein and also spinach, etc. My main "sugar" source has been honey, with pumpkin glut free pancakes, but Im thinking these will have to stop.

Does anyone have any colitis related insights on thrush?

Eat yogurt it should help. When I had thrush I was prescribed something I had to take 3 times a day, it really helped. I also would suck on Regular Fisherman friends, gargle with salt water, gargle with some hydrogen peroxide and water, I also stopped taking my Advair inhalor because it seemed to contribute to the problem.

I think there were other things and sorry I can't recall the med I was prescribed, I will post back if I can find the receipt.

Good luck

freddyj,
Sorry about the thrush on top of everything else, but it can happen with some of the meds as well as UC in general. Can you ask for a round of fluconazole (Diflucan)? You just might also notice an improvement in your UC symptoms, too. We had suspected some yeast issues in our son(although not thrush) and he actually had a nice response to the Diflucan, at least temporarily. Yes, honey is out - lots of info available online about the various anti-yeast diets. We don't follow them religiously, since we got the RX, but do follow the general principles (no honey, no yeast, low sugar, etc.). Hope you get it fixed soon!

hey freddy!

i read an article last week about natural anti fungals that are safer for IBDers. as soon as i read your post, i was scouring the internet again trying to find it.

here it is:

http://www.naturaldigestivehealing.com/blog/2011/08/19/natural-anti-microbial-supplements-for-ibd/

thrush has always plagued me, too. i started getting it when i was teenager due to my asthma meds/inhalers. i took nystatin a few times but it was just so gross! years later when i started getting it again with IBD, i started using saccharamyces boulardii to treat it. that has always helped me. but if it doesn't work for you, this article has some great suggestions.

Thanks BG,

Btw, I had asthma growing up and into adulthood. Never got thrush from my inhalers, but I basically eliminated the asthma 99% when I started drinking something called vitamineral green about 5-7 years ago. Dont know why it had that effect, but it did, for certain. Hard to believe but one less thing to worry about. I sometimes wonder if my inflammatory short circuitry was just rerouted to now this...

I have been on many probiotics as I just took flagyl, and S. boularldii in in there.

Anyway I see you are currently anemic wih low hemoglobin. Why do you think that is and what are you doing about it?

Hey Freddy,

I've struggled with this in the past! Yuck! It was miserable, so I really feel for you right now!

I tried all natural treatments, but in the end, it was Nystatin that resolved this issue, and homemade kefir and SCD that kept it from coming back. As long as I drink my kefir every day and don't eat refined carbs, I don't have candida issues. So far, it's been two years since I've had issues with yeast.

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this! I hope you can find relief soon!

Thanks Writergirl,

I took a few days of nystatin when it was first acting up, but it came back. I find strong sal***er gargles helps, but hydrogen peroxide is terrible, you get a fried mouth with thrush... Bad.

Im trying to find a way out of this without abandoning carbs for good... Not something I want to do.

I've had good results with CandiGone by RenewLife. Thing is, you need to take it for a while (1-3 months) to see changes. It's all natural.

Oh, BTW... taking an antifungal and not changing your diet won't work so well. Gotta go sugar-free and low carb as much as possible.

Hey Freddy - If I remember right you just came off or are still on Flagyl. Hence the thrush. I got it all the time when on it. A lot of people do.

Ask your GI for a gargle. I forget what it's called but, he'll know - it'll be gone pretty much the next day. Maybe in two.

Not sure why they don't tell people to call in for this when they prescribe Flagyl or Cipro

Thanks Mark,

Actually I am just off flagyl, which can exacerbate thrush, but I had it worst a few weeks before that.. its just sticking around. It seems (?) like it worsens when I eat more carbs/sugar but hard to say. Seeing GI today so Ill ask him what he thinks.
