 Greetings all;

This is my first time posting on a forum so please forgive my ineptitude. I just wanted

to share something that might help others with ulcerative colitis.

I have had uc for about 16 years, early on I had a lot of remissions (all on its own) later it became

pretty much constant with varying degrees of severity. I couldnt take mesalamine of any kind although

I tried repeatedly, and steroids were even worse. Immune suppressors I disregarded out of hand.

I got worse and worse with each colonoscopy, from mild colitis to marked, 20+ bowel movements per day, pyoderma gangrenosum etc... finally I came across a study about Boswellia which is a tree sap and I started taking a standardized tablet of that along with a standardized Turmeric capsule. I take 8000mg a day of the Turmeric and 4000mg a day of the boswellia. My colitis was gone in two weeks, not "knocked back" a little but gone completely with zero side effects. Oh the Bowellia and Turmeric should be taken with Bromelain, an enzyme that helps in the bioavailability. Best of luck to all, this has been a miracle for me.

There are a lot of good studies on those. I took both Boswellia and Turmeric but they didn't seem to do anything for me. Although, I must confess, I don't believe I took them in the amounts you did and did not take Bromelain with it. I might have to file this in my memory banks for the future. Do you have any thoughts on Curcumin? Glad this worked for you. Do you continue taking these?

I am getting ready to try a drop in dosage, maybe by 50% and see if I maintain

remission. I havent tried a curcurman extract.

mike,

Thanks for sharing. I started taking Boswellia two days ago (900 mg a day). I based this dosage based on the well-known clinical trial. How did you decide on such a high dose (4000 mg), and are you sure the Bromelain makes a differnce? Should I be able to experience relief without Bromelain, and do you believe such a high dose of Boswellia is necessary?

I imagine you'd recommend purchasing tumeric too, but I might want to see if Boswellia works first. I've had little luck with natural supplements thus far.

thank you

Excellent info, thanks! I just received Boswellia but haven't given it to my son yet, and would think the curcumin he is already taking would suffice for the turmeric (?). I too would be interested to know how you arrived at this dosage and how much bromelain you take. Also, how severe were your symptoms two weeks ago when you started? Do you do any other dietary restrictions, or take any other supplements? Thanks and I hope this continues to work like a charm for you - impressive results!!

I too have read the good news about Boswellia and Turmeric's effects on UC. I have taken these myself which I think help with remission (for me) but they have not reversed a flare. But, I did not take them in such dosages.

i tried turmeric with no problem (no improvement either) but the boswellia gave me a lot of cramping. i still have some left in the bottle but i'd be hesitant to try it again.

I started out with 300mg three times a day for 3 weeks with no change, added turmeric at same dose

with no change, quit for awhile and then started really looking into bioavailability after another try

with 60mg pred that really messed me up. I took an educated risk with the higher doses but felt that I

had nothing to lose, what can be worse than pred for your body? Anyway, large doses worked quickly,

I added the brom based on research. Its all new and I'm still refining, but it worked!

Banana girl, I wonder If the bromelain has something to do with preventing cramping?
I see you just posted about adding the bromellain due to research. Can you explain what you found?

Sorry, not very good at this. the turmeric, boswellia and bromelain I take with each meal, so the dosage I listed is divided. Tha brom is in 500mg tabs, one with each meal. When I am flaring I cant tolerate dairy or wheat very well, right now I am eating everything, it has truly been life changing for
me so far.

Mike&uc,
Are you still taking the 8000mg of turmeric and 4000mg of Boswellia or are you now taking the recommend dose or at all? And you are taking 500mg 3x daily of the Bromelain? You are cured or in remission?
My husband was diagnosed last Monday with UC after 4 months of symptoms and the past 3 months with 10-15 bowel movements a day. He started taking sulfasalazine and its making him nauseated and he has been vomiting. I have been doing the research on Boswellia, Turmeric, as well as Bromelain and ordered all three with the Boswellia on back order along with some probiotics for him to take. He his ready to get started on them asap. He does not at all want to get started on prednisone. I just want more than anything to see my husband healed or at least have it go into remission. He is not the same person and it hurts to see him in so much pain. My sympathy goes out to everyone thy has had to deal with this and their families.

Please watch it with high doses of Boswellia, there is some liver toxicity associated with Boswellia at least
in mice.

Great to hear your report. But that is a LOT of Boswellia. Have you considered tapering down and looking for a good maintenance dose? In any case I'd be wary of using that much long term without finding some research concerning such a high dose.

Hello everyone, I just recently found out about supplementing with boswellia/turmeric. Now that it has been several years I would like to find out how everyone is doing now. I am researching this because my son was recently diagnosed with Crohn's and is on Pentasa, with the threat of surgery to remove a section of small intestine that has strictured. I'm looking for herbal alternatives that really work. He is following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and has been taking slippery elm and ginger.

Anyone have results with boswellia after all this time?

I regularly take boswellia and curcumin (from turmeric) not to “cure” UC but because it seems to help maintain remission.

Lecithin or phosphatidylcholine (PPC) was originally extracted from egg yolks and is used as an emulsifier in cooking and as a food supplement to lower cholesterol. It obviously won't cure your son's strictures but perhaps PPC can help to make them less likely.

I used to take PPC to lower cholesterol and later for my UC and it seemed to halp for the first couple of years. Then all of a sudden it made things much, much worse. I think it might be that phosphatidylcholine is no longer derived from egg yolks but from soybeans, and about 95 percent of soy is GMO saturated with Roundup (glyphosate).

BTW don't trust getting PPC from “organic” soybeans since our USDA has allowed GMO corn and soybeans imported from Eastern Europe and China to be labeled 'organic'.

www.lifeextension.com/Protocols/Gastrointestinal/Digestive-Disorders/Page-08
Bowel strictures, abnormal temporary or permanent narrowing of the bowel, are characterized by excess deposition of collagen in the intestinal wall. A study was conducted to determine the effect of PPC in the prevention of bowel strictures. Three groups of rats were assessed: a control group, a confirmed colitis group, and a group of rats diagnosed with colitis, but receiving phosphatidylcholine. In conjunction with the study, collagen deposition and collagenase activity in colonic tissue were measured in all of the groups. None of the control rats, but 12 of 16 rats with colitis, developed colonic strictures.

In contrast, only two of 15 phosphatidylcholine-fed rats with colitis showed strictures. Collagen content was much higher in the rats with colitis than the phosphatidylcholine-fed rats with colitis and the control rats. Collagenase activity in colonic tissue was, also, much higher in the phosphatidylcholine-fed rats (Mourelle et al. 1996). Phosphatidylcholine appears to enhance collagen catabolism, restricting collagen buildup in inflamed intestinal tissue and the resulting stricture formation.

Anyone else have any positive or negative reports with using Boswellia serrata for ulcerative colitis or Crohn's?
