So, my latest approach: I'm eliminating anything with lectins from my diet: whole grains, legumes, cow's milk, and nightshades.

Any thoughts about lectins? Does anyone on a no-grain diet eat sprouted grains? Apparently, sprouting removes the lectins.

Madpotter,

Yes, I've heard of lectins - they promote inflammation, and an immuno-response, much like gluten and dairy does.

I think it's a great idea to stay away from the whole class you mentioned.

Let us know how it goes.

I think goat's milk is ok bc the article I read only mentioned cow's milk. I put the link to the article below. Tell me if you think this is for reals. It makes a lot of sense as to why several of us have success on paleo, some on SCD and some eliminating nightshades. The comments below the article are interesting, too. I'll have to look into blood type. Sorry I don't know how to make a hot link...you'll have to copy/paste.

I read the thing about sprouted grains not having lectins on someone's paleo blog. I'll try to find out more. I'm interested in that, too. If that's true would you eat grains????

Ok, looks like evidence is mixed so far about sprouting grains to reduce lectins. Should probably continue to avoid them...:(

Please let us know how it works out for you. I personally dont see diet having any impact on my particular case of UC.

Soystud, so your current diet has put you back in remission? I remember you were doing very well then fell off the wagon, UC came back, and now it's gone again? If so, that's great!

notsosickly, I personally think when your colon gets to a certain point everything affects it so its hard to tell. I only had minor success with eliminating food. I had to use 6MP to get into clinical remission, but what's weird is that the food that affected me before still bothers me now. I think the meds have gotten my colon to a point where I have some control over food now. I don't want to be on 6MP forever, so I plan to use this time to fine tune diet so I have a shot at getting off. I hate taking it!

ya mad, i'm doing well again - thanks for akising !

just trying to get normal - it takes sooooooooooooooo stinkin long to heal !

i believe if everyone had the time, there would be lots more happy forum members - but how the heck do you live life and work on getting better at the same time ? jobs, family, responsibilties kinda get in the way -

i'm lucky that i can do both !

I don't believe dietary modifications ALONE are enough for most UC sufferers, but I do think they're an important part of the solution. I feel my best when I'm totally grain and dairy free.

I've never tried sprouted grains. I'm currently eating Paleo and eating any type/preparation of grain is counterintuitive to the Paleo mindset. It's just not worth the effort or the risk to me.

I wish I wasn't on 6mp too. I am lucky i've been able to do well on such a low dose and I could see diet being helpful in my overall health. I definitely eat too many carbs in general but I really don't eat meat. I am not sure if I could live on fruit and veggies, especially if I am limiting which ones I eat. I also don't have the time to spend preparing special meals. After a long day of work, I am lucky if I have the energy to pick up the phone and order a meal. I've eaten sprouted grain bread and such but never 100% in replacement of other grain so I doubt I would have noticed any difference.

Sorry, soystud. Didn't realize my signature didn't post. In it, you'll see the overview of what's helped me maintain long-term remission. I'm actually doing so well, my doc has agreed to let me cut even the maintenance dose of azulfadine in half. Will be happy to answer any questions.

What do you guys eat for breakfast on paleo? Today I ate pineapple. I was thinking about hard boiling eggs. When I used to be on SCD I made almond flour/pumpkin muffins with honey. I used to eat hard cheese and grapes on SCD, but now no dairy...

What are some other meals you like to eat on paleo?

I'm on the autoimmune paleo - at least trying it for a while - and that means no eggs and no nut flour either. My breakfast has become pretty simple: some form of meat protein like bacon or turkey or chicken breast, sweet potato or winter squash, fruit (berries, banana, natural applesauce) and a tablespoon of Udo's oil. I don't want a huge breakfast or anything really weird of spicy. I do miss my almond flour quick bread. Once I move from AI paleo back to a more standard version, I'll probably start slowly adding the eggs and nut flour back in.

Soy- where do you buy goat's milk? A local farm? How does the taste compare to cow's milk? Looks like it doesn't have high lectin content....I keep seeing it pop up in articles on lectins. Do you eat goat's milk cheese, too?
