ive been on pred since January and i took my last dose on monday. even though im seeing a tiny little of blood it has not gotten any worse. the pentassa enemas should be able to fix that! im really hoping that this summer i dont get sick for once!! last 3 years ive been flaring every summer!! Now i just have to try to loose the extra 10 lbs i gained while on Pred!!

It's possible that seasonal diet changes are effecting your UC, such as possibly eating more fruits, veggies, etc. Something you may want to consider.

good for you, and good luck..
I'm at 30mg now.. hoping to be off without issues by mid july and enjoy a pred free, symptom free summer...
40yr old female
1st symptoms 2006, UC diagnosis 2007.
1st flare - 1 year. Solid remission with Mesalamine for 3 yrs.
2nd flare - 1 year (Jan 2010 til 2011). steroids (dependant -didn't work) Eventually 4.8g mezavant and 4g salofalk enema and sunflower/spinach got me into remission.
3rd flare - Mid-Aug 2012 – 6 good weeks in Dec/Jan but now battling round 2
Hospitalized April 16th 2013 - Mesalamine failing to work... still on 4.8g for now though, 60mg Solumedrol now droped to 40mg oral Prednisone (not responding either but need to wean) - 1st does REmicade april 26th, waiting to see if I respond.

yeah this time I took pred a lot longer than the other times. usually it was for 2 months max but this time around it was 5 months. it is an evil drug. I had teeth fillings that kept falling. I think I went to the dentist 4 times in the last 5 months for either fillings to redo or tooth being cracked. my face looks like a balloon!! right now im trying to do everything right so that I don't get a flare again. I just want a symptom free summer for once!! so far I think remicade is doing its job!

Are you on Imuran and Remicade?
What is your experience with that? You started Imuran first and then they did Remicade to follow up?

I just dropped my pred dose down to 20 mg today. Hoping it all goes well. My face is huge and I am tired of that. My Pred crazy level has at least gotten a bit better. I think my 3rd loading dose of Remicade is starting to work so hopefully I can get off of this Pred with no problems. Usually the sticking point is at the 10 mg point for me though. I have no fillings so I am good there. I do have sensitivity in my teeth though when drink cold beverages. I never used to have that.

I am in the process of weaning off my Prednisone (have been taking since June, 2012). I am currently taking 15 mg; down to 10 mg next week and then a week of 5 mg and then adios. Hope it doesn't take too long to get rid of the extra facial hair that I have had to deal with since starting the stuff.
Unfortunately I was one of the unlucky people who failed to get any kind of remission with medical intervention including Remicade and I ended up having an urgent Sub-Total Colectomy. No need to tell you what that means. I was extremely sick and weak just prior to surgery as my electrolytes were all messed up. Basically the surgery saved my life. I am almost 6 weeks post-op now and feel better [physically] than I have in over a year. Mentally, I am still trying to be in denial regarding the ostomy. I realize that it is a small price to pay for my life and my health but I am really self conscious whenever I am in public and I loathe the thought of having to [empty] care for the pouch in a public washroom. I am also afraid of having a [messy] accident while in public. I suppose over time I will gain some confidence and get used to the life change but right now I am still depressed about
it. I joke with friends and they all think I am adapting well but on private it is another story.
Since I no longer have a diagnosis of UC, I should be thankful.
Live every day like it is your last; one day you will be right.
Diagnosed - 2012
Prednisone (currently 25 mg - tapering from 60 mg)
Remicade (2 infusions, 1 in another week and then every 8 weeks)

I never had much luck with Prednisone. I was up to 60 milligrams and I just got sicker. I hate that drug. I hope you have a long remission!

cyn...while you were on the pred and weaning....were you on the nightly enemas?
Congratulations for now being off it....you still do need to deal with what's going on now.
You could ask the doc to add a steroid low dosage rectal med to use in conjunction.
Are you also on an oral 5ASA?
How about
fibre supplements?
Wishing you a good summer!

*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.

quincy, I was not always on the enemas. at first I was on the salofalk suppositories and then my GI said that it doesn't treat high enough so then she prescribed me the pentassa enemas. ive been using the enemas every other nights and the other nights I use the suppositories. last couple of days I have not seen any blood so that's a good sign. my GI took me off the 5ASA I was on cause she said it wasn't working so now im on remicade, Imuran and allopurinol.

Hope you're able to feel better soon...I'd suggest the enemas nightly, however.
