Just wanted to update anyone interested on the results of my astaxanthin enema experiment... Well, if this is to be successful, it will be so at the hands (or bottom) of a more inventive person than myself! I tried using capsules of Nutrex brand bioastin natural astaxanthin. While the astaxanthin did not make my condition worse, due to the color of the supplement (bright red!), it was very difficult for me to tell if it helped my bleeding (my main symptom, currently). It had no effect (better or worse) on the number of morning BMs. The material itself was very thin and watery, so I also tried mixing it with the contents of a few vitamin e capsules. It was still thin and difficult to keep in.
Ultimately, I think this might be worth an experiment for those using enemas. As my inflammation is currently very low down (the last 2 inches or so), suppositories have been more beneficial for me due to their ability for more prolonged contact with the lower portion of the rectum. Perhaps if I had created a suppository with coconut oil and astaxanthin I would have seen more benefit?
For those of you wishing to try this - I will warn you that the astaxanthin has a very strong algae smell. Not unbearable, but something to keep in mind! :)
My doctor is calling in a script for sodium butyrate suppositories this afternoon, so I will also report back on my experience with those. If anyone here has tried the sodium butyrate suppositories, I'd love to hear their experiences. I did a search on sodium butyrate on this forum, but found results from those taking the supplement orally (which I am already doing).
As a side note - how awesome is it that we have this forum to share our experiences with one another??? This illness is treated so differently in so many people - it's nice to have a place where we can share and learn from one another. :)
