There is no way that having a flexible sigmoidoscopy is worse than childbirth. Absolutely no way. For one thing it only takes a few minutes. It can be a little uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful, but it is nowhere near childbirth. I've had many flex sigs in my lifetime and the only one that was really unpleasant was when my disease was so bad that I was already in the hospital.
Please try not to worry so much... the important thing is that you are getting checked out now. More information is always better, you will feel better knowing that you've had the situation looked into diligently. Even if it turns out to be IBD it is better to know and get treatment than not know and fear the worst.
