I was able to scoop the tab out with a plastic spoon one of these times and mashed it, noticing powder still inside.
Well, my question to you was whether, when you examined the whole tablet in your poop, there was a split down the side of the tablet, with a hole boring into it. If so then the tablet was working correctly. You said you crushed it and there was some powder in it; well there should still be some powder inside but it should be mostly hollow inside. It really depends what you saw during your examination.
If you are worried about
it, then switch to another 5ASA, as Lialda, Apriso, balsalazide (Colazal) and others all work differently, have different coatings, etc. Most GIs will say it doesn't matter to them which if those meds you are on, as long as you are on one of them and the dosage under-which they prescribed you. Lialda and Apriso are both convenient, once a day medications, while the others are taken 3 times a day. Balsalazide (Colazal) comes without a coating, you can
open up the capsule and pour the insides onto applesauce, yogurt, or whatever and eat it. Personally, I like lialda it's 1,200 mgs of medication per pill, I take 4 in the early morning and I am done for the rest of the day. Apriso is once a day, but smaller pills, so you'll have to take more of them all in the am.
