Yes, you can use Canasa long term, you can use it indefinitely if you want. There are a number of people on this forum who have used Canasa for years and years. Canasa is often prescribed to those whose uc is limited to their rectum (a.k.a. Proctitis). The active ingredient in Canasa is Meslamine, which is a topical, anti-inflammatory medicine. Anti-inflammatories are among the safest of the uc drugs, having the fewest and least serious side effects. As it is mostly topical, most of the medicine is flushed out of your system when you poop. A small percentage, like 10%, of the medicine is absorbed into your blood stream, filtered out by your liver, and is also flushed out of your system when you pee. Nothing to worry about
