Lucky us (not).
I haven't done much research on IBS but have long thought it was the same stuff going on as UC, just no blood and less inflammation. Some people here have no inflammation they say and yet have IBS symptoms.
I saw an article that found that IBS is not just functional, it can be seen.
Article is from gastroendonews.com but you have to register (free) to read. They haven't sent me any spam in 2 years so may be worthwhile to do that.www.gastroendonews.com/ViewArticle.aspx?d=In%2bthe%2bNews&d_id=187&i=January+2013&i_id=920&a_id=22460
Here's a snip:
"For the first time, investigators have documented structural abnormalities in the small bowel of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These findings “will fundamentally change our thinking on the disease,” researchers told attendees of the 2012 American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting (abstract 52).
“Given the visible structural lesions in the small bowel of IBS patients, I think it is accurate to say that we can no longer call IBS a functional bowel disorder,” said principal investigator Julia Liu, MD, assistant professor at the University of Alberta’s Center of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada."
